A GARDENER has come up with a clever idea to create extra color in your garden for spring.
She called it her "bulb lasagna" but the prep has to be done this fall in order to see the blossoming once winter is over.
But once the hard work has been done, in three easy steps, you can then forget about it for a few months.
Once the weather starts to warm up again you can sit back and enjoy the results of your layering effect in compost.
The idea came from Hannah of Jay Parker's, a family business operating since 1933.
Standing in the fresh air, she had all the items she needed for her potting technique in her post.
"I’m just going to show you how to do a bulb lasagna," she said.
“So this is a really good way to get lots of color in a very small space.
“For this bulb lasagna, I’ve decided to use daffodils, hyacinths, and crocuses."
First into the pot, already prepared with a bed of compost, she placed some late flowering bulbs, in this case, the Winston Churchill variety.

“The first layer is pretty well spaced," Hannah explained, stressing that there was no need to crowd them.
This was covered with some more compost before she was ready to layer the next set of bulbs, a mid-flowering variety, the hyacinth.
“This is a hyacinth mix so there’s multiple colors in there that will brighten up this part a lot."
Again, more compost covered this layer ready for the final one.
“This is going to be a large flowering crocus, an early flowering bulb," she said.
Over the top layer of compost, she spread some potting grit, which, she said was good for "drainage and hopefully would deter pests.”
Now, all you had to do was sit back and wait for a blooming display in February and March.
"Pop It somewhere sheltered and they start coming up in the spring for you," said Hannah.
