Waterproof mascara has been around in some form since 1938 after makeup designers and manufacturers realised there was a need for something more permanent to withstand sweat, tears and any water. You might think your safest bet is to wear waterproof mascara every single day you wear mascara… who needs a regular mascara when you’ve got a sturdier option? Well, wearing waterproof mascara every day is believed by some to be risky. Express.co.uk chatted to make up artist Gemma Rimmington www.gemmarimmingtonmakeup.com to find out.

Mascara is one of the most transformative makeup products because it lengthens, thickens and darkens your eyelashes and makes your eyes stand out.

This can make you look more glamorous, alert and well-rested, making it a real confidence booster even when you can’t be bothered to put on any other makeup or do your hair.

The one problem with regular mascara is that if you accidentally rub your eyes with wet hands, cry or sweat, you’re going to look really messy!

When it comes to mascara, there are loads of products on the market and we have high expectations.

Gemma said: “A mascara needs to add volume and length, create flutter-worthy drama and on top of that, it needs to stay put.

“The perfect smudge-free mascara is like finding the holy grail and generally speaking, that means opting for the waterproof option.”

Waterproof mascara sticks to your lashes because it contains a chemical called dimethicone copolyol.

This chemical is derived from silica and it repels water and adds shine in lots of different hair products.

Dimethicone copolyol and silicone are both fat-based which means water won’t mix or interfere with the product or cause it to smudge or rub off.

While waterproof mascara is essential for a wild night out, workouts or important life events, its sturdiness can invite a few unwelcome issues when used more regularly.

Gemma said: “From drying ingredients causing the lashes to become brittle and prone to breakage, to being more difficult to remove due to the waterproof formula.

“Excessive rubbing with face wipes and cotton pads will increase the risk of damaging the lashes long term.”

The makeup artist isn’t advising everyone to ditch waterproof mascara for good.

She recommends keeping the waterproof mascara for special occasions, holidays and super sweaty gym sessions only.

To conclude, she said: “When it comes to waterproof mascara, refrain from daily use to keep your lashes healthy!”
