Not sure what to wear today? Shop your wardrobe and look fab on Christmas Day12/25/2022
The day has finally arrived!
The presents have been wrapped (and opened), the turkey is in the oven, and it’s almost time to pour yourself a glass of something fizzy.
But in the chaos of planning, you might have forgotten one detail. What on Earth are you meant to wear today, on Christmas Day?
Yes, we know, it’s too late to order something and of course, the shops are closed for the day.
But help is on hand. We spoke to expert stylists about how to pull together a great outfit for this special day – using items you probably already own.
But before you start rifling through your wardrobe, you need to decide the vibe you’re going for.
Megan Watkins, head stylist at SilkFred, says it’s a good idea to work out what aesthetic will suit your day.
‘Everyone’s Christmas looks a bit different,’ she says. ‘Maybe you’re heading to a pub with your extended family, hosting your own champagne-filled soiree or keeping it low-key with your nearest and dearest.
‘It’s up to you to make the call whether you want to dress up or dress down. Either way, you want to feel good about yourself.’
And if you can’t decide? Farrah-May Archer Boadi, styling team lead at Stitch Fix UK has a great solution: ‘While some people like to go all out with head-to-toe glam, others want to cosy up for the day in their loungewear – and many opt for a midday outfit change to get the best of both worlds.’
All out glam
If you want to dress to the nines, it’s the time to pick out the most extra pieces you own.
Farrah-May says: ‘Dig out your favourite statement piece, whether that be a sequin dress, a bold printed shirt or a velvet blazer – paired with simple accessories and a small stiletto, you’ve got the ultimate in Christmas chic.’
If your sparkly options are few and far between, it’s all about accessorising.
‘Reach for your favourite LBD and add a festive touch with a sparkling set of jewels, some glitzy eye make-up, or a statement clutch bag to complete the look. You might think all black isn’t one for the big day, but monochrome looks can be easily jazzed up.’
When it comes to a colour palette, Megan says: ‘It’s all about jewel tones in deep colours such as plum, emerald or gold.’
Cosy yet stylish
‘Reach for your comfiest lurex or fairisle sweater and French tuck it into an elasticated wide-leg trouser,’ says Farrah-May. ‘If you’re heading out, slip on a seasonal boot to finish your ensemble and add a pair of glittery earrings.’
Megan also recommends a statement knit. She says: ‘This item can be worn with your favourite gym leggings, jeans or a maxi-skirt and can be paired with boots or trainers.
‘A statement knit does the ‘style’ work for you, whilst keeping you warm.’
Absolutely not judgement here if you want to stay in your comfies all day.
Megan says: ‘If you’re planning an ultra low-key day, I would suggest your favourite matching PJs and festive socks to really treat yourself to a cosy Christmas day, where you aren’t leaving the house.’
