Francis “Frankie” Mossman, a New Zealand actor best known for his roles on television shows like Spartacus and The Horizon, has sadly died, his family confirmed. He was 33 years old.

He reportedly passed away in Sydney, Australia on the 14 August, but a cause of death has not been disclosed.

The actor’s brothers set up a GoFundMe to raise money for his repatriation and funeral costs, where they wrote a moving eulogy to celebrate his life and his mother’s wish to bring him home to New Zeland.

The post read: “Francis’ mother’s final wish is to see her son one last time before he is laid to rest.

“With your help and generosity, we want to make this happen for her.

“With heavy hearts and much sadness, we learned of Francis’ passing last Saturday 14th August in Sydney, Australia.

“Francis was an energetic force and much-loved brother and son.

“He was a well-respected member of the acting community and found a supportive and endearing family community in Sydney.”

It ended: “His smile and energetic presence will be sorely missed by those lucky enough to have known him.”

At time of writing, the GoFundMe had raised $15,201 out of their $15,000 goal.

Mossman began his short career in 2006, as reported on his IMDb page, when he starred in a New Zealand soap opera Shortland Street as Taylor.

Two years later, he appeared in the TV series The Amazing Extraordinary Friends in 2008, as well as the film The Richmond Family Massacre in 2009.

He had a long-running regular role on Australian web series The Horizon, on which he starred from 2013 to 2017.

Mossman’s last credited role was in the 2020 short film Dis-Connect.

But he’s perhaps best known for his role on the Starz series Spartacus, as the character Vitus.

He appeared in four episodes, with three of them uncredited.

Following news of his untimely death, Mossman’s family told the Daily Mail Australia that he “had been struggling with the resurfacing of old scars and trauma from high school, which he acknowledged in his last [Instagram] post to the world was a pain he had endured from a young age.”

The 33-year-old’s last post on the social media platform showed a photo of him as a youngster alongside the caption: “Who knew this boy would endure so much pain.”

His family described him as a person who had the “most generous loving heart that lit up wherever he went” and that he will always be “loved dearly and equally missed”.
