Jake Quickenden has opened up on how he and partner Sophie Church have been doing in the lead up to their newborn son Leo's hernia operation this Thursday 8 July.

The 32 year old former X Factor contestant and his girlfriend Sophie, 27, welcomed their baby boy back in February, but recently revealed he needs to return to hospital for surgery to remove a small lump near his groin area.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with OK! about his involvement in Action for Children's Boycott Your Bed campaign, the star explained that it's "got to be done" but he can't help but worry over how it will go.

"He's got an operation on Thursday. He's got a hernia operation," he explained. "So me and Soph and my mum are isolating, because my mum's come down.

"We're isolating until Thursday and then Soph will take him for his operation and hopefully everything will go well but honestly I've never been so worried in my life."

Jake, who recently said his son has "filled a void" after losing his father and brother, continued: "Every time I think about it, I feel sick. But he's in the best hands and it needs doing.

"I think hopefully he'll wake up and not know what's gone on and be absolutely fine and it'll just be me and Soph worrying for no need. But you're bound to worry aren't you?"

Speaking on his role as a father he went on to tell OK!: "I wanted to help Soph as much as possible. I wanted to be the hands on dad, I wanted to do the night feed and the nappy changes and kind of bond as much as I can. Because one silver lining to this whole pandemic is that I've been at home with Leo. So I've managed well.

"Otherwise, I would have been on the road gigging or working. So I've managed to bond with him during this time. So, definitely trying to be as hands on as I possibly can."

Jake is promoting Action for Children's Boycott Your Bed campaign to raise money and awareness to children who live in poverty and may not necessarily have a bed to sleep in.

As part of the campaign, he will be sleeping in an unusual place on Friday 9 July. Speaking about it, he said: "I think it's a privilege that we don't realise sometimes, just a good night's sleep in a normal bed but not everybody gets that.

"So it's just about sleeping somewhere crazy that you wouldn't normally do and support children.

"Especially after the pandemic. It's hit hard everywhere, so just help and get some food for them. Anything that can help is just brilliant."

He added: "I think it reigns home when you start providing for someone else and you're not just being selfish about yourself. It makes you think about families that are struggling and aren't as privileged as other people.

"It makes you think about the little things like water and food that people might not be able to get. After I had Leo… it resonated more with me."
