Nick Kamen became one of the most desired men in the 1980s, after the model stripped down to boxers in a laundrette in a Levi’s 501 advert. The Essex-born star quickly achieved superstardom and reportedly boosted sales of jeans by a huge 500 per cent.

Tributes have poured in following the news of the singer and model’s death at the age 59.

Nick, born Ivor Neville Kamen, reportedly died at his flat in Notting Hill, West London on Tuesday.

His brother Ronald, 65, has revealed that Nick had been suffering from bone cancer for two years and was being nursed at home by his girlfriend, Lucinda.

“His breathing was very shallow and he knew what was coming. He did fight it very hard,” Ronald explained.

“I was with him a few days ago. We have been able to see him, but only one at a time due to the pandemic.”

Ronald added to MailOnline: “That made things a lot worse but he did have the cancer before all the lockdowns.”

He also explained his younger brother had undergone a full blood transfusion as part of his treatment.

Nick was one of eight children and grew up in Harlow with his siblings.

He first came to prominence in 1984 when he appeared on the front cover of the magazine The Face, wearing a ski-hat, lipstick and an orange sweater.

He then went on to appear in the 1980’s Levi’s advertisement, where the model stripped down to boxer shorts.

Within a year, Nick had launched a pop career with help from superstar Madonna.

In a BBC radio interview in 1986, Madonna said she was inspired by his “charisma” and “beautiful voice”, which led her to reach out to him.

At the time, she said: “You know, he’s got so much charm and charisma and there’s something there in the eyes, and that inspired me to write for him.”

Madonna has since paid tribute to Nick following the tragic news of his death.

She penned: “It breaks my heart to know you are gone. You were always such a kind sweet human and you suffered too much.

“Hope you are happier wherever you are Nick Kamen.”

Madonna also shared a black and white photo of herself and Nick spending time together in a recording studio.

Alongside the snap, the Vogue hitmaker posted a series of other pictures of the late model from his successful career.

After the pair met Madonna offered to write and produce the song Each Time You Break My Heart, where she also makes a cameo singing background vocals.

Other tributes included celebrities such as, Boy George, who wrote: “R.I.P to the most beautiful and sweetest man Nick Kamen!”
