EastEnders star Maisie Smith, 19, and singer HRVY, 21, who are Strictly Come Dancing’s youngest contestants in the upcoming series, have admitted they are each other’s biggest competition when it comes to winning the Glitterball trophy this year. In an interview ahead of the launch show, the pair admitted they had discussed their rivalry before even hitting the dance floor.

The actress was asked who she thinks her “biggest competition” could be on the show, to which she revealed: “I’ve spoken to HRVY actually, and he said he feels like he’s got a bit of competition and I said ‘Ditto!’

“So, I feel he’s my biggest rival!

“I haven’t spoken to anyone yet but I’m looking forward to seeing them all soon.”

HRVY also said he reached out to Maisie to joke about her past stint on the show for the Children in Need special.

He revealed: “I messaged Maisie saying, ‘I guess you’re my competition this year then?’

“Obviously everyone’s my competition but I saw her on the Children in Need special and she’s really good.

“I DM’d her and said it was very average just so she wasn’t too big headed about it!”

Maisie won the Children in Need special with Kevin Clifton last year.

Following an impressive performance of the Cha Cha Cha, she lifted the Glitterball trophy with the show’s former pro.

After being unveiled as a contestant for the main show this year, the EastEnders star said she could be the “dark horse” of the series.

Speaking on This Morning, she said: “I’m not going to lie, I’ve got dancing experience.

“I’ve done a bit of hip-hop and street dance throughout my time but I have no technical ability at all.”

Despite her previous win, Maisie went on to say she believes her victory was “an absolute fluke”.

Elsewhere, HRVY’s future on the show is currently in jeopardy as he announced he had coronavirus last week.

A spokesperson for Strictly said: “We can confirm that a member of the Strictly team has tested positive for coronavirus and they are now self-isolating at home following the latest government guidelines.

“We have rigorous protocols in place to manage Covid-19 as the safety of all those involved in the production is paramount,” they added.

HRVY also said on Twitter: “Hi, wasn’t gonna worry anyone and say anything but now the story’s out, I have coronavirus, I’m all good, no symptoms, just isolating for the next 10 days.

“Already super bored so prepare yourselves for my Tik toks.”(sic)

Host Claudia Winkleman also said on The One Show: “He’s isolating and on the finish of that, I think about he’ll have one other check, after which he can hopefully be part of us, and if he can’t, he can’t.”

Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One next Saturday on BBC One.
