Speaking about his life off-camera, the professional chef revealed that he often socialises with his show colleagues.

However, he explained that fans of the show were “astonished” upon seeing him out and about with the likes of wine expert Olly Smith.

Matt revealed that fans are taken aback to find out that the duo are actually friendly away from the show.

He said: “People are always astonished when they see me and Olly out, for example, that we’re actually friends.”

The presenter added that he hopes their camaraderie comes across as genuine on the show.

“But we are and that’s hopefully what resonates on screen,” he added.

The star also revealed that he’d known wine expert Helen McGinn for years before she made her debut on the weekend cooking show.

He continued: “I’ve known Helen for years, we go back to university.”

Matt went on to describe Helen landing her gig on Saturday Kitchen as a “twist of fate”.

“By coincidence she walks on as a wine buyer and gets into the media, so that was a real twist of fate,” he said.

The BBC host went on to clarify that the whole Saturday Kitchen team socialise off camera, contributing to their good natured relationship on the show.

“So we are all friends and we do all go out to the pub afterwards, go out to restaurants and stuff like that, socialise, and that kind of comes across,” he said.

Elsewhere in the interview the star revealed that he was initially “nervous” to take over the BBC show following James Martin’s departure and decade of fronting the programme.

Matt said: “I was quite nervous about it, it wasn’t without trepidation.

“Of course I was kind of a little bit nervous as he has an army of dedicated fans,” he said, referring to James’ loyal fanbase.

However, the acclaimed chef didn’t let his nerves get the best of him and enthusiastically accepted the presenting role.

When asked whether he has any communication with the Michelin star chef, Matt revealed that the pair are both busy with their own shows.

“I haven’t seen him in years,” he admitted.

Matt went on to explain: “He [James] does his thing on ITV, he’s got his social circle and it just happens he doesn’t cross with mine.

“We’ve all got our own little circles we mix in, but they don’t cross,” he clarified.
