Bridgerton actress Phoebe Dynevor, 26, has revealed that she received a “heads up” about her fellow actor and on-screen love interest Rege-Jean Page’s exit from the hit Netflix series. The star – who plays Daphne Bridgerton – appeared on Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast where she broke her silence on her co-star’s exit from the show ahead of the second series and confessed that it threw a “spanner” in the show.
I had a bit of a heads up so I knew but yeah, I guess it is a spanner
Speaking on the podcast, the flame-haired star revealed that she knew about her co-star’s exit ahead of the announcement.
Phoebe also admitted that the departure of Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings, posed a few problems for the series.
She said: “I had a bit of a heads up so I knew but yeah, I guess it is a spanner.”
However, she explained tell-tale signs of what was to come were in the eight Bridgerton books – something that Netflix viewers may not have known.
She continued: “But again, the show centers around the Bridgertons and there are eight books.
“I think maybe the fans of the books were more aware of that happening than the fans of the show,” she added.
It’s been hinted that the next season of the show is set to focus around Jonathan Bailey’s character, Anthony Bridgerton, who is Daphne’s older brother.
Phoebe explained: “I think fans of the books know that every [season] is about a different sibling.
“And we’re very much passing the baton to the lovely Johnny, who plays Anthony.”
The star added that despite missing her co-star, she looks forward to appearing in more scenes with her immediate Bridgerton family.
“Obviously it’s sad to see [Rege-Jean] go but I’m looking forward to being reunited with my family,” she said.
In the series finale, Daphne and Simon were reunited after a brief separation and at the end of the episode, the couple welcomed their first child, a son, who will inherit the title of The Duke of Hastings.
Rege-Jean Page played the role of one of the series’ most popular stars, but in early April, Bridgerton’s official social media accounts broke the news of his departure from the series in a lengthy post.
It read: “Dearest readers. While all eyes turn to Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s quest to find a Viscountess, we bid adieu to Rege-Jean Page, who so triumphantly played the Duke of Hastings.
“We’ll miss Simon’s presence onscreen, but he will always be a part of the Bridgerton family.”
It went on: “Daphne will remain a devoted wife and sister, helping her brother navigate the upcoming social season and what it has to offer – more intrigue and romance than my readers may be able to bear.”
The statement concluded: “Yours truly, Lady Whistledown.”
Distraught fans of the show responded to the announcement to express their devastation.
One wrote: “Well, not sure what the point of watching this now. We all know that Simon was the reason why most of us were watching this :/.”
A second was also in disbelief: “What? He’s still in the rest of the books, although usually as a background character, WHAT ABOUT THE PALL MALL GAME.”
