Piers Morgan, 56, has issued a swipe at James Newman’s Eurovision performance as he slammed claims it had anything to do with Brexit. The outspoken presenter posted in front of his 7.9 million followers after the UK failed to win any points at the competition.
James performed his hit song Embers last night at the competition.
However, despite its popularity back home, the singer failed to win the all-important votes.
Following the contest, some viewers have claimed this may have had something to do with Brexit and how it placed the UK in Europe’s eyes.
Piers has now taken to social media to refute this claim in a brutal tweet.
The former Good Morning Britain presenter instead took aim at singer James in his latest tweet.
He penned: “The UK didn’t get ‘nul points’ in the Eurovision Song Contest because of some sinister revenge for Brexit.
“We got ‘nul points’ because we had a crap song, performed by a crap singer who gave a crap performance. End.”
Piers’ harsh words were criticised by some of his followers.
One wrote: “The song was average, but I’m still proud we sent James.
“He just wanted to send love and positivity to the fans, and he accomplished that…”
Another penned: “Be kind, I didn’t watch it last night but that’s not a kind thing to say.
“Just stop and think for a moment what hurt your words may cause.”
A third added: “This kind of comment is part of the problem.
“We’ve lost respect for each other and our country.
“Why should anyone else have respect for us if we don’t have respect for ourselves?!”
Although, others agreed how it was unlikely to be directly linked to Brexit.
In reply, a follower wrote: “Correct nothing to do with Brexit.
“We’ve been getting s*** points for years and all the political voting is b*******.”
Another waded in, adding: “We always got nil points before Brexit anyway.
“Everyone hates the UK unless they are asking for help or money.”
A third then replied to the broadcaster: “Spot on, Piers!”
Express.co.uk has reached out to James for comment on Piers’ tweet.
Other stars came out in support of James, praising his performance.
Matt Lucas posted on his Twitter page: “We love you James Newman.”
While Michelle Visage tweeted: “I am sending this tweet to James Newman and James only. You were INCREDIBLE.”
Radio DJ OJ Borg added: “James Newman for a knighthood.
“If you are gonna go down go down with humour and honour. You lit up my room. #Eurovision.”
