Sir Rod Stewart, 76, shares his youngest sons Alastair, 15, and Aiden, 10, with wife Penny Lancaster, 49, who he married in 2007. To mark Mother’s Day today, she shared a picture of herself cradling their newborn son at the time Aiden, as big brother Alastair proudly gazed over at his new brother.

In the unearthed picture, Penny appeared make-up free as she beamed for the camera and hugged her two sons.

The model shared the picture on her Instagram Story, in view of her 110,000 followers.

She went on to post the same snap on her page amongst other pictures with her mum Sally and Rod.

In one of the photos, Penny could be seen being cradled as a baby by her mother.

She captioned the post: “I’m so blessed to be sharing this special day with my Mum.

“Sending all my love and best wishes to those Mums and kids that can’t be together.

“I know I wouldn’t be the Mum I am today if it wasn’t for the love, support and encouragement that I got from my Mum.

“I’m so lucky to still be learning from her even now, as we are never too old to take advice #mothersday.”

Penny’s post comes after she sparked backlash following an admission she made on Loose Women earlier this month.

The former model told her co-stars she went out for dinner just hours after she gave birth to Alastair.

She said she left her newborn with her mum to join Rod, her brother and sister-in-law at a restaurant near the hospital.

Penny also revealed Rod asked her not to leave him out when their baby was born.

She spilled: “Rod said to me, ‘Darling, I have had this experience and there’s one thing I am worried about and that’s being pushed out of the picture’.

“‘I understand the baby needs you and you’ll be breastfeeding, but please don’t neglect me’.”

Recalling her reaction, she added: “And I said, ‘I won’t darling’, and of course when the baby comes along and you have a baby brain and you’re breastfeeding it’s difficult.”

Penny went on to say Rod put in place a “golden rule” to not have the baby in the bed.

After sparking some backlash, she later took to Instagram to expand on her admission.

She wrote: “My husband and I agreed that as I was breastfeeding every few hours, our baby Alastair (along with Aiden when he later came along) should be in his cot at the side of our bed but not in our bed (I cheated a few times).

“At the age of 4 months we made the transition of having him in his own room to help him sleep more independently.”

Penny added the transition didn’t stop her son from waking in the night which became a “real struggle” for her.

She went on to say the couple eventually found a good approach where their son finally began to sleep through the night.

“There is no one-size-fits all approach,” she added.

“You need to look at the individual child’s needs as well as the Mums and the family and get professional advice before making hard decisions that you are unsure about.”
