Baroness Karren Brady has today spoken about suffering a miscarriage, after reading about Jessie J’s own struggles this week. The 52-year-old Apprentice star, who is currently the vice-chairman of West Ham United FC, has two children – son Paolo and daughter Sophia.
The more that high-profile women talk publicly about miscarriage, the better
The pair are the product of her marriage with former Canadian soccer player Paul Peschisolido.
However she herself has endured the sadness and “shame” that she says many women associate with miscarriage.
“Many years ago, I had one and it’s such a sad time,” she wrote in her column for The Sun.
“I found it really hard to talk about it openly – and still do.”
The crestfallen business woman continued: “I guess [that’s] because there is some kind of shame or a sense of failure attached to the loss.
“It’s tough because it is a bereavement.
“So the idea of not feeling able to discuss it is so counter-intuitive.
“But maybe if more people spoke openly about their losses then that would not be the case.”
Following her own advice, she has spoken out to give support to singer Jessie J, who recently shared her own sad news.
The ‘Pricetag’ star had previously been told by doctors that she would probably never have children, so she had been delighted when the strip on her pregnancy test had unexpectedly revealed a positive result.
However, she had been unable to carry her child to full term, leaving her devastated.
“I decided to have a baby on my own because it’s all I’ve ever wanted and life is short,” Jessie had written, after her relationship broke down.
Yet at the third scan, doctors broke the news to her that they had lost the heartbeat.
Brave Jessie later shared that she felt sure she would have another positive test in the future.
Although she was adamant that she would perform a concert to fans as planned, to avoid letting them down, she had explained that the sadness and shock were “overwhelming”.
Later, her emotion came pouring out in public.
“I have so much admiration for singer Jessie J for revealing, on Instagram, that she has had a miscarriage,” Karren explained.
“A few hours later, she broke down in tears on stage. My heart goes out to her.
“Given that one in three pregnancies ends in miscarriage, we really do not talk about it enough.”
She added encouragingly: “The more that high-profile women talk publicly about miscarriage, the better.”
