36 years since the Zeebrugge ferry disaster that killed 193 people03/07/2023
The vessel capsized 91 metres from the shore after the bow door was left open and seawater flooded the decks. An investigation blamed the poor working practices of ferry owner Townsend-Thoresen.
58 years ago (1965) A golden eagle named Goldie continued to evade capture after escaping from London’s Regent’s Park Zoo. The bird had mainly spent a week of freedom flying around the park but also ventured to Tottenham Court Road and Camden Town.
Keepers eventually recaptured him after tempting him with dead rabbit on a rope.
14 years ago (2009) Two off-duty soldiers were shot dead, while two others, along with two delivery men, were injured in an attack by dissident group the Real IRA in an attack at Massereene Barracks in Antrim.
The barracks has been demolished and is now a science park.
