Chase the winter sun with our top picks of luxurious Caribbean holidays

Fed up of those dark November nights?

Why not hop on a plance (yep, it’s allowed again!) and jet off to the Caribbean to stay in one of these heavenly tropical resorts.

We’ve picked out five getaways in some of the Caribbean’s most popular destinations.

From beach-living in Jamaica to the bustling city of Bridgetown, Barbados, here are the places to book.

Immerse yourself in Grenada

A delicious nutmeg scent perfumes Grenada. Factories producing the powdered spice, as well as those making rum or chocolate, can be visited on days out, as can waterfalls, underwater sculpture parks and the monkeys in Grand Etang National Park’s rainforest.

Grenada’s True Blue Bay Resort promises bold Caribbean colours in lovely bedrooms, cookery classes, several pools and a stellar dive centre.

Be awed by Antigua

As your plane descends and Antigua appears, delighted gasps are likely to be heard. Lapped by green-blue seas, the island’s coast seems to host hundreds of white-sand coves.

You’ll find the best of them either side of capital St John’s, all the way down to Jolly Harbour and its championship golf course.

Even more await on sleepier sister isle Barbuda, easily reached by a 15-minute flight.

Plumly positioned behind Dickenson Bay, the Siboney Beach Club has newly refurbished rooms to complement its blue-white tones, tropical gardens, freshwater pool and seaside restaurant.

Chill out in Jamaica

Fancy guessing the length of Seven Mile Beach? Wrong. It’s actually four miles.

Such inexactitude exemplifies Jamaica’s easy-going vibe – one that’s particularly discernible in Negril. Once a renowned hippy hangout, this settlement has resisted overdevelopment to remain a place of impromptu reggae concerts and great restaurants.

Set right on Seven Mile’s golden shore, romantic hotel Sandy Haven lets you spend days horizontally. Beside a hot tub, pool and spa, you get
a secluded beach area dotted with cabanas.

Activity options range from snorkelling to caving, bamboo-rafting up rivers and bathing under waterfalls.

Be swayed by St Lucia

St Lucia sees coral-dappled seas and banana-shaped beaches give way to pointy, jungle-covered mountains and waterfalls. Most of the action takes place on its north-west flank, where Reduit Beach’s many miles of white sand fringe horseshoe-shaped Rodney Bay.

The bulk of seaside resorts here are bland all-inclusives but not SoCo House. Opening this month, the adults-only hotel combines chic European decor with French-Creole architecture.

If you can resist its pool and bars, set off on day trips to the Piton peaks to zip-line in forest reserves or experience a ‘drive-in volcano’ with mud baths.

Hit the beach in Barbados

‘Beach, eat, drink, dance, repeat,’ advises Rihanna, an official tourism ambassador, about Barbados. Such a trip is easily accomplished on the island’s south coast, where powdery, fudge-coloured shores, enterprising Bajan restaurants and rum-
soaked nightlife options are plentiful.

But don’t neglect the interior’s exuberant gardens and old sugar plantations.

Stay at the South Beach Hotel – whose sleek, Miami-style looks extend to a pool bar – and you’ll also be between Unesco-listed capital Bridgetown, with its old English garrison, and the town of Oistins, known for fish fry weekend parties. Pop star RiRi would certainly approve.
