Dentist debunks toothpaste and mouthwash dispenser hack

One of the great things about social media is the number of clever life hacks there are to learn from.

Sharing a useful, simple hack is a fast track to a 15 minutes of internet fame, but unfortunately some of the tricks out there are simply not a good idea.

Enter one hack, which involves stirring toothpaste and mouthwash together and decanting the mixture into a clear container with a pump to easily distribute it onto one’s toothbrush.

While you might think this is a clever way to make your toothpaste and mouthwash aesthetically pleasing and save some time in one fell swoop, a dentist has posted a video imploring people to not try this at home.

Dr. Suhail Mohiuddin debunked this hack on TikTok, saying: ‘Ok, here’s a question, have you ever seen toothpaste in a clear tube before? Nope.

‘The ingredients in toothpaste aren’t UV-stable, so exposing them to light makes them ineffective.

‘Please don’t do this.’

It’s also worth noting that combining your mouthwash and your toothpaste isn’t exactly necessary, given what we’ve previously been told about mouthwash.

After dentist Anna Peterson made a TikTok saying using mouthwash immediately after brushing would wash the higher concentration of fluoride in your toothpaste right off your teeth, we asked another dentist to unpack the facts.

Mehy Lo Presti of The Kensington Dentist told us: ‘The use of conventional mouthwashes is generally not recommended unless there is a specific reason to do that, like a post-surgery or a physical inability to brush your teeth. Although, mouthwash doesn’t substitute brushing and flossing your teeth.’

‘If possible,’ he added, ‘you shouldn’t even rinse with water, to keep the fluoride working in your mouth.’
