There’s a lot of good stuff coming to Disney+ this July and it just so happens to be a great time to be a true crime fan…
Disney+ has rapidly become one of our go-to streaming services, thanks to the sheer wealth of truly excellent TV and films available.
Not only does it strike the fine balance between providing us with all the Marvel, Disney and Pixar content we could possibly desire, but the platform is also becoming synonymous with thought-provoking drama and binge-watchable shows. We’ve had Dopesick and The Dropout to sink our teeth into in recent months and it seems like the offerings are only getting better this July.

So, from the much-anticipated Daisy Edgar-Jones drama Under The Banner Of Heaven to new Latin American thriller Santa Evita and true crime documentary The Most Dangerous Animal Of All, here’s our pick of the best new series and movies coming to Disney+ this month.
Under The Banner Of Heaven
It may seem like we’ve been waiting an age for this true crime drama to come to our shores – it’s already aired on Hulu in the US – it’s safe to say that the FOMO has been very real with this series.
The new drama sees Andrew Garfield take his first small-screen role as Jeb Pyre, a devoted Mormon detective who is tasked with investigating events that transpired within the Lafferty family. The series is based on the bestselling novel of the same name and is set to explore the brutal 1984 murders of Brenda Lafferty (played by Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her 15-month-old daughter, Erica. Much like the novel, Under The Banner Of Heaven aims to offer audiences “an incisive look inside isolated Mormon Fundamentalist communities in America” as it follows a devout detective whose faith is tested as he investigates the savagery surrounding Brenda’s death.
Under The Banner Of Heaven will be available to stream on Disney+ on 27 July.

Captive Audience: A Real American Horror Story
In 1972, seven-year-old Steven vanishes from Merced, California, but when he heroically returns seven years later, the media can’t get enough of the story. But this isn’t the Hollywood ending it appears to be.
Nearly a decade later, his dramatic return to his family sparked 80s-era “stranger danger” warnings, legal reforms and one iconic made-for-TV movie in which the family’s ordeal was transformed into a prime-time miniseries watched by 70 million Americans. When the credits rolled and the movie ended, it closed one tragic chapter of the family’s life but opened another.
Ever thought about the way we consume true crime? Well, this limited documentary series explores the evolution of this kind of storytelling through the lens of one family’s 50-year journey and two brothers; one a hero, the other a villain. It’s about how truth becomes story and story becomes truth – on TV, in the justice system and in our minds.
Captive Audience: A Real American Horror Story is available to stream now on Disney+.
The Most Dangerous Animal Of All
Based on The New York Times-bestselling book of the same name, The Most Dangerous Animal Of All is a four-part documentary series that explores one man’s search for the father who abandoned him, only to uncover the worst: he believes his father is the Zodiac killer, one of the most infamous serial killers in American history.
The Most Dangerous Animal Of All will be available to stream on Disney+ on 20 July.
Wild Crime season 1
If you like true crime with a touch of impressive geographical landscapes, this documentary is the one for you. In total, the American National Park System is made up of 85 million acres and only 34 special agents nationwide are responsible for investigating crimes that occur on this public land.
In Wild Crime, the documentary chronicles this uniquely qualified team that leads in-depth and complicated investigations as they seek to bring law and order to some of America’s most rugged and remote landscapes.
Wild Crime will be available to stream on Disney+ on 20 July.
City Of Angels / City Of Death
This new six-part documentary series tells the incredible true-crime story of a fascinating era between the mid 70s through to the mid 80s, when over 20 serial killers terrorised Los Angeles. But a group of dedicated detectives – members of the LAPD’s Robbery Homicide Division – hunted them all down.
According to the synopsis: “This is a story that has never been told before – how a small band of law enforcement heroes juggled multiple serial killer investigations at the same time, and – before the advent of DNA technology – had only the tried-and-true ‘shoe leather’ methods to track down and catch the most diabolical criminals in California history.
“From the Hillside Strangler to the Freeway Killer, from the Skid Row Stabber to the Tool Box Killers, from the Dating Game Killer to the Sunset Strip Killers… evil was everywhere. But so were the hard-charging detectives who worked around the clock to catch them.”
City Of Angels / City Of Death will be available to stream on Disney+ on 20 July.
Truth And Lies: The Last Gangster
Another ABC News special that’s making its way to Disney+ this month for true crime fans is Truth And Lies: The Last Gangster. In this film, we uncover the life of one of the most notorious hitmen in mafia history, Sammy ‘The Bull’ Gravano.
As the synopsis reads: “Revealing secret rites and practices of the mafia and speaks candidly about the use of murder as an instrument of power and control. A man who murdered 19 people, including his closest friend and his brother-in-law, was part of a violent brotherhood known as Cosa Nostra. For years he and John Gotti, the head of the Gambino family, controlled portions of New York City’s economy under a rule of fear and intimidation, and his loyalty to ‘The Family’ came at a devastating cost.”
Truth And Lies: The Last Gangster is available to stream on Disney+ on 22 July.
Sinfluencer Of Soho
If you’re yet to reach your fill of Anna Sorokin (or Delvey, as she’s more popularly known) content, this new Disney+ documentary should be at the top of your watchlist. We’ve had Inventing Anna, we’ve had Fake Heiress, and now, we have the Sinfluencer Of Soho. In this documentary, we uncover how Sorokin, known as the ‘Soho Grifter’, fascinated the world and conned the highest social circles into believing she was a German heiress worth millions.
Sinfluencer Of Soho will be available to stream on Disney+ on 22 July.
And other glorious non-true crime-related Disney+ releases:
This new Salma Hayek-produced Latin American thriller may already be sending chills down our spines but we honestly can’t wait to watch it. The seven-episode series is based on the bestselling book of the same name written by Argentinian author Tomás Eloy Martínez. It follows the intriguing tale of Eva Peron’s embalmed body, which remained unburied for three years awaiting the construction of a monument that was never completed.
Santa Evita is the story of a body with no grave and the legend that was born from it. In 1955, a military coup in Argentina overthrew then president Juan Domingo Perón and hid Evita’s body for 16 years to prevent it from becoming a symbol against the regime. Before her death, Eva had become a powerful political figure as General Perón’s wife, and her wandering unburied corpse haunted the country’s political arena for over two decades.
Santa Evita will be available to stream on Disney+ on 26 July.
Not Okay follows Danni Sanders (Zoey Deutch), an aimless aspiring writer with no friends, no romantic prospects and – worst of all – no followers, who fakes an Instagram-friendly trip to Paris in the hopes of boosting her social media clout.
As the synopsis continues: “When a terrifying incident strikes the City Of Lights, Danni unwittingly falls into a lie bigger than she ever imagined. She ‘returns’ a hero, even striking up an unlikely friendship with Rowan (Mia Isaac), a school-shooting survivor dedicated to societal change, and scooping up the man of her dreams Colin (Dylan O’Brien).
“As an influencer and advocate, Danni finally has the life and audience she always wanted. But it’s only a matter of time before the façade cracks and she learns the hard way that the internet loves a takedown.”
Not Okay will be available to stream on Disney+ on 29 July.
