Disney Plus subscribers warned about major change to service just like Netflix

11/14/2023

The CEO of Disney+ said he will crack down on password sharing among its users similar to Netflix.

Disney+ was introduced by Disney in 2019 and has swiftly become the fourth-largest streaming service in terms of market share.

However, CEO Bob Iger is now aiming to address the issue of users sharing passwords with individuals in different households.

During an earnings call on Wednesday, Iger announced that Disney will be “implementing stronger standards around account sharing.”

Despite this, Disney+ users need not make immediate alternative plans, as Iger noted: “Given the timing of our planned rollout, we don’t expect a meaningful impact until 2025.”

This initiative may bring to mind Netflix’s recent crackdown on password sharing.

Netflix has asserted that its new policy has proven effective and contributed to increased company profits.

Yet, Disney’s strategy extends beyond curbing account sharing.

The company is in the process of acquiring full ownership of Hulu by purchasing the remaining stake held by Comcast.

In light of this development, Disney intends to introduce a new subscription that combines Hulu and Disney+.

While Iger did not specify a precise timeline for the launch, he said: “We remain on track to roll out a more unified one-app experience domestically, making extensive general entertainment content available to bundle subscribers via Disney+.”

As of now, Disney+ boasts 112.6 million subscribers globally, with a significant influx of new members from international regions.
