Fernando Alonso weighs in on Michael Schumacher vs Lewis Hamilton GOAT debate10/24/2020
Former world champion Fernando Alonso insists it’s almost impossible to split Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher, but believes the pair deserve to be considered as the two best drivers in the history of Formula One.
When the Spaniard confirmed his return to McLaren six years ago he was tied with Hamilton on 32 Grand Prix victories, with the Brit on the verge of confirming his status as a double world champion.
Now, six years on and Alonso on the brink of making a dramatic return to the sport, Hamilton is on the cusp of eclipsing Schumacher and surpassing his record of 91 Grand Prix wins.
Asked if he could separate the pair, Alonso told the Daily Telegraph: ‘I think both of them have an amazing talent.
‘They are legends of the sport and they capitalised on the machinery that they had in the right moment. They didn’t make any mistakes and they nailed it every time that they put the helmet on. They both deserve to be the two best in the sport.’
Hamilton, meanwhile, will start tomorrow’s Portuguese Grand Prix on pole position after he edged out team-mate Valtteri Bottas with the last lap of a rain-interrupted qualifying session.
‘I can’t tell you how hard that was today,’ said Hamilton. ‘Yes, we’ve got a great car but you have to drive the nuts off of it to pull out a lap. Valtteri’s been so quick this weekend, he’s topped every session. So I’ve just been digging and digging and digging to find that extra time.
‘At the end, I chose to do three laps to give me a chance at beating his time. That last lap, it got better and better as I went through it.
‘It’s a really really hardcore circuit. There’s places where you can’t see where you’re going, you’re looking at the sky for long periods. It really is one of the most challenging circuits that I’ve been to.’
