First Dates’ Fred Sirieix battle with iron deficiency as he ‘preps for jungle’

Doctor advises what to eat to help an iron deficiency

Back in September, First Dates’ Fred Sirieix – who is rumoured to be appearing on the next series of I’m a Celeb… – discovered he was deficient in iron, so, as per his doctor’s recommendation he underwent medical procedures for further investigation into the condition.

On his Instagram, on September 29, the maitre d’ from the popular Channel 4 dating show wrote: “I had a routine blood test which came back with a slight deficiency in iron.”

Iron deficiency symptoms, as listed by the NHS:

  • Tiredness and lack of energy
  • Shortness of breath
  • Noticeable heartbeats
  • Pale skin.

A simple blood test will confirm if you have iron deficiency anaemia.

Fred said: “This needed investigating. And so I was booked for a gastroscopy [and] colonoscopy.”

While he felt “stressed out” about the “invasive procedures”, which involved a tube going from his mouth to his stomach, and another from his bottom to his colon, Fred decided not to be sedated for the investigation.

“I’m busy and can’t afford to take 24 hours off,” he said in regards to saying no to sedation.

“The gastroscopy is the most unpleasant of the two because it makes you gag. Basically, it is awful,” he stated.

“However, it just lasts five minutes. Pain-wise, I’ve had much worse. Anyone could take it.”

As for the colonoscopy, Fred said it was “easy peasy” in contrast to the gastroscopy he had.

When iron deficiency is picked up on a blood test, the NHS want to check if there is any gastrointestinal blood loss.

Gastrointestinal blood loss can be caused by the use of aspirin, for example, or the development of stomach ulcers.

The health body noted that, in some cases, the checks can be done to rule out cancer.

While Fred hasn’t revealed what the results were from the investigation, it seems that he and the medical team are not concerned.

Fred is thought to be joining numerous other TV personalities in this year’s I’m A Celeb… Get Me Out Of Here! jungle.

Reported contestants include jockey player Frankie Dettori, 52, This Morning’s Josie Gibson, 38, ex-EastEnder Danielle Harold, 31, Made in Chelsea’s Sam Thompson, 31, and JLS singer Marvin Humes, 38.

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! airs on Sunday, November 19 on ITV at 9pm.
