GOLDWIN and Spiber Propose New Sustainable Streetwear Solutions For FW2303/31/2023
Eight years ago, Japanese distributor GOLDWIN announced it would join forces with Spiber to implement the biotech company’s Brewed Protein™ fiber into an assortment of garments. Having already seen production on limited quantities of GOLDWIN 0 knitwear and shell jackets, the brand is now launching a perennial line of Brewed Protein™ outerwear for Fall/Winter 2023.
With contributions from nanamica, The North Face, TNF Purple Label, Woolrich and GOLDWIN’s own brand, the new collection compiles some of streetwear’s most iconic outerwear pieces remade with the plant-based fiber. Although most labels commonly release new designs in sustainable collections, the distributor’s move to reworking these popular icons explores how supplementing well-loved yet purposeful garments can permit conscious mass-production.
GOLDWIN’s new Cross Field 3L jacket succinctly abides to this goal. Its technical, sport-facing structure features the new fiber blended with wool and nylon on the outer shell with a waterproof yet breathable PTFE mid-layer. nanamica’s contribution adopts a similar material make-up but envisions Brewed Protein™ on the smarter Balmacaan jacket.
For its sustainably reconstructed pieces, The North Face selects its mainstay icons: the Nuptse jacket and 30th anniversary Sierra Parka. Maintaining its weatherproof qualities, these jackets are built from four layers with the plant-based fiber making up 60% of the outer. To round off the collection, Woolrich presents its compact yet seemingly minimal Future Arctic Parka.
