I'm 24 and in love with the 45-year-old woman who runs the local café

DEAR DEIDRE: I’M a man of 24 and I’m in love with somebody old enough to be my mum. She’s 45.

I can’t stop thinking about her. She runs a cafe where I call in every day for my coffee on the way to work.

She has a beautiful smile and a few weeks ago, she pushed a cupcake across the counter towards me saying, “Thanks for your support through Covid”.

I went red as I felt that there was a connection – but I guess she did that for all her regular customers. I want to tell her how I feel, but I’m not sure how she’d react.

I know she’s divorced.

We talked one day when I went in for lunch.

Can relationships with such a big age gap work?

DEIDRE SAYS: Yes they can, but you only know her as the person who runs the cafe.

If she’s divorced, she may have children near your age. Would you be ready for that? Would you want children yourself?

There’s a lot to consider. Get to know her a little then perhaps ask her if she’d like to go out.

Even if she says no, she will feel flattered.

My support pack on Age Gaps may help. Good luck.
