Insane 170 finish sees Rob Cross dump out Daryl Gurney in Ally Pally classic

12/28/2021

Rob Cross hit a "Fallon Sherrock special" to cap a thrilling 4-3 win against Daryl Gurney and advance to the last eight of the 2022 PDC World Championship at Ally Pally.

The Hastings electrician pulled out all the stops, including 13 maximum 180s, to edge a high-quality contest and reach the fourth round, where he will meet Gary Anderson or Ian White.

And to clinch victory, Cross – the 2018 champion – produced a 170 checkout, the golden ticket Queen of the Palace Sherrock had hit to progress at last month's Grand Slam.

On another night when the bill at the William Hill PDC World Championship was curtailed by Covid, Cross and Gurney served up a belter.

Cross said: "I believe I'm a better player than I was when I won the world title because I have the experience now.

"I'm enjoying the game, even though I should have finished it earlier, but to end it with a 170 was a Fallon Sherrock special!

"After previously missing match darts, I had to dig myself out of a hole because Daryl is a phenomenal player – you don't win two TV titles if you can't play."

And it wasn't just Cross who enjoyed the Ally Pally classic with darts fans flocking to Twitter to extend their praise towards Pembury-born tungsten thrower.

"Robert Cross, pure Hollywood. Respect," wrote one supporter.

"What a match that was! Take a bow gents. Misses 3 match darts to win it in the last set then wins it with a 170 in the next… only in darts," said another.

While one fan commented: "A 9 darter and a 170 finish to win matches in this tournament so far. You can’t even buy entertainment like that."
