Kate Middleton shows ‘empathy’ and ‘concern’ in latest heartfelt video appearance

Kate Middleton and William thank NHS staff on Burns Night

Kate Middleton, 39, and Prince William, 38, have worked throughout the pandemic, visiting those on the frontline. Last night, to mark Burns Night, the couple sat down on their sofa to share how they had teamed up with NHS charities to provide staff in Scotland with a Burns celebration lunch. What did the Duchess’ body language show?

Sharing the video on their official Instagram page, the Cambridges have attracted more than one million views.

The caption read: “This #BurnsNight, we’ve teamed up with @nhscharitiestogether to provide staff at @nhstayside with a Burns celebration lunch of haggis, needs and tatties.

“Thank you for all that you do.”

In the video, Kate expressed how this Burns Night would be different to usual and the couple shared a huge thank you to all frontline workers who have been working throughout the pandemic.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, body language expert Judi James shared how Kate shows “empathy” and “concern” for the hospital workers.

The expert said: “Looking stunning in red tartan, Kate adopts a pose here that is a well-worn classic for professional female presenters working as half of a sofa-based double-act with a male presenter.

“While William splays his knees out, hunches slightly toward camera in a gesture of active, alpha enthusiasm, and places his hands in a loose, angled clasp, Kate sits bolt upright with her knees clamped together and her hands clasped in a tight finger-mesh with only the raised thumb and erect index finger of her left hand announcing an intention to speak.”

“This is the ‘Mary Poppins’ pose, complete with a warm, cheek-rounding smile and a caring eye-smile.”

Judi added that this pose signals that William may be taking the lead.

She said: “With professional presenters it signals traditional and rather whiskery values where the man is taking lead role with signals of dominance and confidence while the woman looks more passive and tense.

“With this scripted and very choreographed piece to camera William and Kate have stepped up a notch in terms of their TV skills, talking in turns and working around a VT, and I’m guessing it might have taken more than one take to get it right, which might also account for the sense of tension in Kate’s hand gestures here.”

Kate regularly uses her hands to express her words, something with Judi thinks could be a sign of both empathy and tension.

Judi went on: “When Kate delivers her own part of the script she throws her hands up in a gesture of emphatic empathy and concern for her hospital-workers audience.

“Her burst of energy here shows her in a more assured, confident role but when she re-clasps her hands her fingers look even tighter and she adds a thumb-to-thumb rub gesture.

“This hand ritual can be a double signal of tension, with the tight clasp and the self-comfort thumb-rub suggesting Kate is a retrospective worrier.”

The expert explained that when people deliver scripts or speeches, they usually peak in terms of performance anxiety before or after they speak.

With the Duchess, Judi suggested that her anxiety peaks after she has spoken.

The body language expert continued: “Kate’s signals here suggest her worries might peak after she has spoken, suggesting a adept performer who can nevertheless be their own worst critic with a strong desire to be as perfect as possible in the way that they communicate.”

For the video appearance, Kate looked stunning in a recycled tartan dress.

The £1,920 Emilia Wickstead ‘Anti’ dress features a red tartan dress with long sleeves and a white collar.

She teamed the gorgeous look with her Simone Rocha Faux-Pearl Curb-Chain Earrings.

The £349 earrings which are stocked on the likes of Farfetch have become a staple piece in Kate’s jewellery collection.

The description of the earrings reads: “Chunky gold-tone curb-chain links adorned with round faux pearls and finished with post-back fastenings to hold them safely in place.”
