Lift your look with a swishy midi

Lift your look with a swishy midi: Summer’s almost over, so bridge the seasons with a little va va voom!

  • Jo Elvin explains her love of the midi skirt began in 2015 when working in Milan
  • UK-based fashion editor describes how versatile and flattering these skirts are
  • Some people say they are for tall people but she explains it’s about proportions

Wow, Jo, you look so… glamorous today!’ I was working in Milan, and when the icy Italian fashion PR uttered the compliment, she made no effort to conceal her surprise.

Instead of my usual magazine editor’s uniform of a slim trouser suit and jazzy flats, I’d gone for a midi-skirt. It was Sonia Rykiel and I’d fallen in love with its horizontal blue and white stripes and full A-line shape. I had worn it with a simple, crisp, white shirt and strappy, heeled navy sandals.

The look was professional and chic, but also feminine and as that PR said, glamorous. The hard-won praise had me practically skipping about, enjoying the swish of my girly, swirly skirt. That was 2015, and it began my love with the midi.

I even bought another Sonia Rykiel number. They cost a bomb, but have been worth every penny because they’re so versatile. I’ve worn them with a button-down shirt and court shoes to meetings, a slogan sweatshirt and trainers to barbecues and sequin tops and metallic heels to black-tie events. With that sliver of calf and ankle showing, they give a swishy hit of femininity.

And now the shops are brimming with fresh temptation.

The skirts here take their inspiration from the Bottega Veneta autumn/winter 2022 runway. Super-hot designer Matthieu Blazy’s interpretation of the look played up the midi’s va-va-voom appeal: voluminous A-lines, nipped-in waists, sugarspun colours and a fabulously frothy, tulle underlay. He emphasised their pretty A-line shape with a snug, light knit on top.

Sometimes people say midi lengths are strictly for tall women. It’s not about height at all, but rather getting the proportion right. The hem should hit halfway down your calf.

I guarantee, the right midi will flatter you for years and years.
