Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer promotes D’Mani Mellor to first-team squad with striker, 20, impressing in training

D’MANI MELLOR’s rise through Manchester United’s ranks looks set to continue with the starlet being added to the Red Devils' senior squad.

The promotion marks a major step forward for the centre-forward who suffered a serious knee injury in November 2020.

The striker, 20, got on the scoresheet during the Under-23's 2-2 draw with Leicester in their Premier League 2 season-opener last week.

And on Wednesday Mellor was photographed training with United’s first-team players ahead of the team’s upcoming clash with Southampton.

A picture of the academy starlet was shared on Instagram by Mason Greenwood who played with the youngster in United’s youth side.

Another image shows the player in good spirits and laughing alongsideJesse Lingard.

Mellor’s move into the squad, which includes former Academy gems such as Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba, has been greeted with delight by fans on social media.

Like Greenwood, the player is thought to be regarded by coaching staff as one of the Red Devils' most promising young forwards.

On Twitter, one supporter said the forward’s hold-up play is “something to highlight” and complimented his positional work.

And another fan praised Mellor for battling his way back from his knee ligament problem.

Mellor put in some standout performances for the team before his ACL injury registering four goals and six assists in 15 appearances in the 2019-20 season.

And the Manchester-born ace returned to action for the Red Devils’ under-23s this month, netting in their 4-2 pre-season win against Sheffield Wednesday.

The forward, who has battled back to fitness, recently signed a contract extension that will see him remain at Old Trafford until June 2022.

The deal includes an option for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side to extend the contract for another year.

It is reported that members of United’s Professional Development Phase group could get chances to train with the first-team with Covid restrictions easing and training bubbles no longer a problem.

The group is reported to include former Liverpool youth forward Ethan Ennis, 16, who moved to Manchester from the Anfield giants this summer.
