    TABLE TOPPERS

Manchester United have announced that summer arrivals Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane are both in contention to start against Southampton.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side face the Saints at St Mary’s on Sunday following their 5-1 win against rivals Leeds at Old Trafford last week.

And while there may be temptation for the Red Devils to name an unchanged team, the club have declared the starting XI could be tinkered.

Sancho made his United debut against Leeds as a second half substitute, while Varane was announced as a new signing prior to the clash at the Theatre of Dreams.

In a statement released on United’s website, the table-toppers said: “Jadon Sancho came off the bench last time out and is pushing for his first start since his summer switch from Borussia Dortmund.

“Another of our close-season captures, France international Raphael Varane, has been training all week after being unveiled at Old Trafford before the Leeds opener.

“The classy centre-back could also be in contention for a place, although he was not involved in the friendly with Burnley in midweek."

    GOOD MORNING RED DEVILS FANS

Jesse Lingard could leave Manchester United this summer in search of first-team football.

The 28-year-old missed out on the opening match of the season against Leeds due to Covid-19 but scored in a behind closed doors friendly against Burnley in mid-week.

After Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick and Paul Pogba grabbed four assists in the win over Leeds, Lingard could struggle for game time.

And that could lead the attacking midfielder to search for a move elsewhere, according to The Times.

Former Man Utd defender Rafael da Silva has revealed what current player at the club he loves watching.

Like many other United fans, the defender singled out Bruno Fernandes.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “He is crazy. When he came to Manchester United everyone knew he was a good player, but not that good.

“He’s been amazing. It’s fun to watch him play. He’s a very clever player. I love watching him play for United.”

Paul Pogba is not set to sign a new contract with Manchester United this summer, according to reports.

Though the Frenchman is reported to be warming to the idea of staying with the Red Devils, he is set to wait until after the end of the transfer window on August 31 before considering a new deal.

If Pogba does not sign a new contract he will be free to leave for nothing next summer.

Man Utd are interested in signing French midfield sensation Aurelien Tchouameni, according to reports.

And could launch a late move to sign the £34m-rated Monaco midfielder.

According to journalist Duncan Castles on the Transfer Window Podcast, with Paul Pogba’s current contract situation – United are preparing for the possibility of life after the Frenchman.

      QUITE WRIGHT

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has said Bruno Fernandes reached "another level" against Leeds when he scored a hat-trick.

Speaking to The Ringer, Wright said: "What I saw from Bruno Fernandes was somebody that was playing the game as if he was giving everybody a taste of what he can do without the fans there.

"When the fans came in, the man has just gone to another level of performance. It was almost as if he was saying: 'I am announcing myself now.'"

      RASH RUSH

Marcus Rashford is making steady progress after shoulder surgery and could be back in training by the end of the month, writes DANIEL CUTTS.

The Manchester United striker, 23, had an operation two weeks ago.

Rashford’s injury hampered the end to his season as he played through the pain barrier at Euro 2020.

He is having rehab sessions twice a week.

And United are hopeful he could even be back playing at the end of September.

That would be weeks before his planned return date.

Rashford could start light training within the next ten days.

And the club are delighted at the speed of his recovery.

      TCHOU OF CLASS

Man Utd are interested in signing French midfield sensation Aurelien Tchouameni, according to reports.

And could launch a late move to sign the £34m-rated Monaco midfielder.

According to journalist Duncan Castles on the Transfer Window Podcast, with Paul Pogba's current contract situation – United are preparing for the possibility of life after the Frenchman.

Castles said: "Manchester United, [Tchouameni] very much falls within their scouting remit.

“The targeting of that kind of younger cadre of players who can develop into top stars has been more of a focus in recent years.

“He is an obvious fit for Manchester United if the change in midfield happens that we’ve been talking about for so long, which is that Paul Pogba doesn’t sign a new contract at Man Utd or is sold this summer.

“Again, most likely avenue for that to happen is Paris Saint-Germain at present.

"Then you bring in Tchouameni who would certainly be much lower maintenance than Pogba, should be more consistent in his performance.

“If they have that space in their squad created by Pogba, then Tchouameni is one of the options to replace.

“He would be cheaper than options like Declan Rice, who has been mentioned as an option for them. I’m told Monaco value him at around €40m.”

        GUNNAR SIGN MORE

Manchester United still want to make one more signing this summer but need to sell first, according to reports.

The Red Devils have enjoyed a busy transfer window, adding Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Tom Heaton to their star-studded squad.

According to the Manchester Evening News, United are exploring the possibility of signing another midfielder before the end of August.

Doubts have been raised about the strength of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s midfield, with many unconvinced by Fred and Scott McTominay.

There are also huge question marks over Paul Pogba’s future, with the Frenchman entering the final year of his Old Trafford contract.

And some believe Nemanja Matic’s best days are behind him after the ex-Chelsea star turned 33 last month.

It’s believed United would like to bring in another top-class player but need to shift some deadwood before they can do anymore business.

        NO POG?

Paul Pogba is not set to sign a new contract with Manchester United this summer, according to reports.

Though the Frenchman is reported to be warming to the idea of staying with the Red Devils, he is set to wait until after the end of the transfer window on August 31 before considering a new deal.

If Pogba does not sign a new contract he will be free to leave for nothing next summer.

        KING DENIS

Denis Law was simply nicknamed ‘The King’.

        FER REAL

Rio Ferdinand would have left Arsene Wenger with a big selection headache, had he signed for Arsenal in 2014.

The transfer was on the cards after the defender left Manchester United and approached the Gunners about a potential move to North London.

Alas, Wenger rejected the opportunity and Ferdinand has admitted that he would have struggled to help the club's pursuit of silverware.

He told his YouTube channel: "The maddest thing is I thought about [joining] Arsenal.

"I said, 'Arsene, listen, I am leaving Man United and if you want, I will come and try and help the dressing room etc. because I think you need help in that department'.

"'I will obviously play but, more importantly, I will come for the culture'.

"He didn't take me up on the offer and he was right because my performances at QPR weren't up to the levels.

"But in the changing room, I believe I could have helped him, because that is where a lot of the culture derives from."

        'HARD ROAD AHEAD'

Denis Law has revealed he is suffering from Alzheimer's in an emotional statement about his condition.

Law, 81, said: “I am at the point where I feel I want to be open about my condition. I have been diagnosed with ‘mixed dementia’, which is more than one type of dementia, in my case this being Alzheimer's and Vascular dementia.

“This has been an extremely difficult year for everyone and the long periods of isolation have certainly not helped.

“It is an incredibly challenging and problematic disease and I have witnessed many friends go through this.

“You hope that it won’t happen to you, even make jokes about it whilst ignoring the early signs because you don’t want it to be true. You get angry, frustrated, confused and then worried, worried for your family, as they will be the ones dealing with it.

“However the time has come to tackle this head on, excuse the pun. I recognise how my brain is deteriorating and how my memory evades me when I don’t want it to and how this causes me distress in situations that are beyond my control.

“I do understand what is happening and that is why I want to address my situation now whilst I am able, because I know there will be days when I don’t understand and I hate the thought of that right now.

“In the height of the pandemic I said I hoped that if one positive was to come out of it, it would be that it would make people kinder to each other, so that’s what I am hoping for now.”

          S-MART SIGNINGS

Anthony Martial has hailed Man Utd’s new arrivals Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho.

The French striker told the club’s website: “”Varane, I know already, of course.

“And the skill set he has, I know he will bring a lot to our team, in addition to his long experience, so we are all really delighted with these two new players we have.”

He added: “Varane is a big-time player. I don’t think he [Varane] will need too much time to adapt to his new environment, but I’m there for him for whatever little help or advice he may need.

“He has all his experience – he’s a player who has won a lot during the time of his career at Real Madrid and also in the French national team, so I am sure he will bring all his powers, as he really is a top player and I know things are going to go well for him here at United.”
