Michael Jackson had many controversial moments during his career, but also in his personal life. One of the more conventional things he did, however, was get married and have children, two of whom were born to him and his second wife Debbie Rowe. Prince Jackson is one of these children – but when was he born and was he the eldest?
A simple question of when Prince Jackson was born is strangely difficult to answer, thanks to his father Michael’s slightly eccentric ways.
The reason for this is there are two Prince Jacksons, depending on your view.
The first is Michael Joseph Jackson Jr, who is commonly known as Prince and was born on February 13, 1997 to Michael and Debbie.
However, there is another Prince in the mix, who was born in 2002.
Michael’s youngest child, was born Prince Michael Jackson II, on February 21, 2002, via a surrogate mother.
However, Prince has gone by various nicknames, most famously, Blanket.
He became known as such due to being covered in a blanket during many public appearances when he was a baby.
This became even more prominent in the media when Jackson held the baby over the railings of the balcony of a hotel room in Berlin, four storeys above ground.
The hotel incident took place when Blanket was only a few months old, and over time the nickname stuck.
Many of Michael’s children were similarly covered with blankets and other items to shield them from the press, but Blanket’s nickname stuck as such.
As a teenager, however, he has gone by Bigi, shaking off his childhood nickname.
As a result, while Blanket/Bigi may actually be called Prince, Michael’s eldest child is known as Prince more regularly.
Therefore, Prince was born Michael Joseph Jackson Jr on February 13, 1997, and is the eldest child of the pop star.
His sister Paris-Michael Katherine Jackson, was also born to the singer and his second wife, and is only just a year younger than Prince.
She was born on April 3, 1998, and was named after her father and her grandmother, who later became her guardian when Michael died.
Since his father’s death, Prince focused on the business side of life, starting a charity called Heal Los Angeles recently.
Speaking to This Morning’s Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford, however, Prince gave a huge insight into what his siblings are really like, and how they are also planning to make their mark on the world.
He said: “We’re very close – that unconventional upbringing you mentioned only tightened our bond as siblings.
“Siblings are tight no matter what, but the way we grew up and interact with each other, there’s an unspoken bond. We can almost read each other’s body language and minds…
“My sister is really focused on her career and her music; I’m so proud of her and all the strides she’s making and my brother, every time I talk to him I’m impressed with how intelligent he is. The way he words his sentences…
“It’s always about working together and how can we collaborate and push each other up and make each other better.”
The siblings are very close, despite taking different paths – though Prince has also spoken of how he feels “protective” towards his siblings, and feels he has an additional duty to ensuring his siblings’ wellbeing.
