Netflix Ties CBS’ All-Time Record After Bagging 44 Emmys09/20/2021
Netflix has tied the all-time record for the most Emmys won in a single year with 44, a mark previously reached by Viacom CBS Inc’s CBS broadcast network in 1974. Powered by historic wins for The Crown for Outstanding Drama Series and The Queen’s Gambit for Outstanding Limited Series, the streaming service reclaimed the top spot among all platforms.

The drama win is a hugely significant moment for Netflix, which has dominated viewership over the last decade but had never won a top series Emmy. Netflix had secured 30 nominations for best drama, comedy, and limited series over the last eight years but never managed to best more prestigious networks like HBO, AMC, and FX.
Last night Netflix finally snagged its first major scripted series Emmy after The Crown won the Outstanding Drama Series category, and in the final moments of the telecast, The Queen’s Gambit bested HBO’s Mare of East town and won the Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series as well.

Netflix wasn’t the only streaming service to have a good night; this appeared to be a watershed year for Apple TV+, which took home 10 Emmys, including seven for its hit comedy series Ted Lasso. The series swept the comedy category with wins in the acting category for Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham (best supporting actors) along with Jason Sudeikis (best actor). Ted Lasso also took the award for best comedy series.

HBO finished with 19 trophies, down from its platform-leading total of 30 in 2020. The network scored multiple wins with its limited series Mare of Easttown, including a lead actress trophy for Kate Winslet for her performance as a grieving police detective.

The Emmy Awards have helped build the reputation of Netflix and its streaming peers, which have become a way of life during the pandemic, and they have successfully used the honors as a marketing tool to gain awareness and subscribers.
Overall, the online streaming platforms accounted for more than half of the awards presented this year, further solidifying their status as the leading edge of creativity based on the voting by Television Academy members.
As of Q2 2021, Netflix has roughly 209 million global paid memberships, an increase of more than 16 million subscribers from the same time period last year, making it the streaming leader.
