Your diet can help keep your vision strong and to reduce your risk of developing serious conditions threatening your ability to see. By incorporating these six foods into your diet, you can improve the health of your eyes. What foods are they?

More than two million people in the UK are living with sight loss, and many more are considered at risk for losing their eyesight.

According to Fight For Sight, 78 percent of people said their sight was the sense they were most scared of losing.

To protect your eyesight, you must look after your eyes by getting regular eye tests, stopping smoking, and eating a healthy diet.

These are six of the best foods to improve your eyesight.

1 – Fish

Because fish is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, it can help keep your retina healthy and improve your eyesight.

Some studies have also suggested diets with regular portions of fish can prevent conditions like macular degeneration or glaucoma.

If you can’t eat fish because of your diet, you can get vegan omega-3 supplements to reap the benefits of fatty acids.

2 – Eggs

Egg yolks are full of vitamins to keep your eyesight tip-top.

A typical egg yolk contains the following eye-friendly nutrients:

  • Vitamin A
  • Lutein
  • Zeaxanthin
  • Zinc

Vitamin A protects the cornea while lutein and zeaxanthin can reduce your risk of developing macular degeneration or glaucoma.

Zinc is the key to being able to see better at night, or when the lights are low. Which brings us on to an age-old question: do carrots really help you see in the dark?

3 – Carrots

Famous for improving your eyesight, carrots are a great food to eat if you’d like to boost your vision.

Carrots contain high levels of vitamin A and beta carotene, both of which will help keep your eyes healthy.

One symptom of vitamin A deficiency is night blindness, so eating carrots can help you avoid this, but won’t give you supernatural night vision.

Although there is some truth in the idea carrots help you to see in the dark, this was actually originally circulated as a myth by British propagandists during World War 2.

Not wanting the Germans to discover the British had radar technology allowing them to identify bombers on night raids, the Air Ministry instead claimed British pilots ate piles of carrots to improve their night vision.

4 – Almonds

Almonds are full of vitamin E.

This vitamin is often credited with making your skin beautifully soft and smooth, but it could also improve your eyesight and reduce your risk of cataracts.

5 – Kale

Often hailed as a superfood, kale certainly has some impressive health credentials.

Kale is high in antioxidants including lutein and zeaxanthin which can help slash your risk of developing serious eye conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration.

6 – Oranges

Oranges are high in vitamin C, which has many important functions around your body.

One function of vitamin C is maintaining healthy blood vessels in the eyes which is essential for their health.
