Premier League of Darts 2021: Betting tips and £120 in free bets for Milton Keynes event03/31/2021
THE Premier League of Darts is nearly upon us and for the first time in years, the tournament feels refreshed with three debutants in a ten man field.
And SunSport runs through the field and makes some tips for the event.
MICHAEL VAN GERWEN is still the betting favourite, despite being #2 in the world and missing out on finals night for the first time last year.
With all the current form, he’s easier to oppose than most years.
GERWYN PRICE on the other hand has never appeared in finals night, after three years of trying.
You won’t get much juice on that continuing. He’s 2/5 to make the top four.
Could well be adding this trophy to his ever-increasing haul.
PETER WRIGHT never got closer than in 2017, when he missed six match darts to take what would have been his first TV title.
Now he’s a former World Champion (and a semi-finalist last year) he’s a clear third favourite, but there are others in the field that are more worthy of a play, especially each-way.
JONNY CLAYTON has all the current form, but the relentless format will either help or hinder him.
Whether he keeps this form up in a few months also comes into play.
Definitely a contender, but he is far too short at his current price of 10/1.
GARY ANDERSON can win to nil or lose to nil, depending on his nightly mood.
He has said that 2021 is the year he ‘practises like hell’ and if he’s true to his word, he’s a standout in the field at 11/1.
But if he doesn’t start the league well he may get disinterested. I don’t see a lot of value either way.
DIMITRI VAN DEN BERGH ticks all the boxes to make it back-to-back debut winners.
His game suits the short format, his confidence will see him thrive when the crowds come back and his knee should be healing well, which will see him in better shape than the start of the year.
He also gets eased into the format somewhat, with no crowds to begin with.
I’d have put him above Anderson in the betting: at 14/1 he’s well worth a bet each-way.
JOSE DE SOUSA is a wildcard in every aspect and he will be box-office viewing in all of his matches.
If you have money on him, you’d better hope he’s suddenly learnt to count properly. Any mistake will cripple him in a best of 12 leg format!
There’s no standout maximum hitter in this field (with the possible exception of Wright), so I’d recommend the 4/1 for most 180s in the tournament.
Let’s hope for a revision to his old nickname of the ‘Portuguese Man O’ Scores’.
NATHAN ASPINALL is part of a trilogy of players with absolutely no current form. However out of the three, he’s the one that looks most likely to rediscover it in this tournament.
His first two games against Durrant and Dimitri are crucial.
It’s a fantastic chance for two early wins and if he gets on the board early, he’ll suddenly be feeling a lot better. 3/1 for him to make the semis appeals at the price.
ROB CROSS can thank his lucky stars he was somehow still ranked 4th at the start of the year, so he qualified automatically.
He failed to defend any of his major prize money last year and a slide down the rankings is inevitable.
It looks like this will be the last time in a while we see him in the Premier League and 6/5 to finish in the bottom 2 (just like last year) rounds off my selections.
GLEN DURRANT has battled with Covid and an accompanying loss of form.
The defending champ will put up a fight no doubt, but has an uphill battle just to make finals night.
The proud Smoggie is made of stern stuff but I can’t tip him on current form. But if he does impress this year it’ll be a fantastic silencing of the haters.
1.5pts – Dimitri van den Bergh E/W @ 14/1
1pt – Jose de Sousa most tournament 180s @ 4/1
1pt – Nathan Aspinall to qualify for semi-finals @ 3/1
1.5pts – Rob Cross to finish in the bottom 2 @ 6/5
