Sheffield Wednesday next manager odds: Cook and Barton favourites for Owls job, McCarthy, Poyet and Neville in the frame

JOEY BARTON is firmly in the mix to be appointed the next permanent manager of Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls are still searching for their new boss having dismissed veteran Welshman Tony Pulis after just 10 matches in charge.

The 62-year-old replaced Garry Monk in November but collected just one victory against Coventry before being given his marching orders on December 28.

Chairman Dejphon Chansiri said in a statement: "The performances and results have not been of the level expected since Tony Pulis was appointed."

The search for a new appointment is well underway and former Wigan manager Paul Cook is the current favourite at 2/1.

Cook, 53, has been out of work since leaving Wigan last summer but his stock remains high having guided the Latics to the League One title and an impressive FA Cup run.

Once-capped England midfielder Barton is a free agent having been relieved of his duties at Fleetwood Town after two-and-a-half years in charge.

The 38-year-old was previously a 33/1 chance but his availability has seen his odds shrink to just 9/4.

Owls first-team coach Neil Thompson, who has been placed in temporary charge, is next in the betting at 4/1.

Thompson has sparked a mini revival during his two-game spell – beating both Middlesbrough and Derby.

Further back are former Huddersfield boss Danny Cowley and recently sacked APOEL coach Mick McCarthy at 7s.

Swiss manager Rene Weiler and former assistant manager at Hillsborough, Bruno Lage, are locked at 15/2 with Gus Poyet at 10/1 chance.

Phil Neville was on Wednesday's shortlist of candidates when Monk was dismissed. He's offered at 14/1 despite claims he's heading Stateside to manage David Beckham's Inter Miami.
