'Dexter: New Blood': Michael C. Hall Talks Dexter's 'Contradictory' Hopes12/18/2021
Dexter: New Blood re-introduced Dexter Morgan’s son Harrison to the world. Harrison is now a teenager living with his father in Iron Lake. Dexter is watching closely to see if his son has the same dark impulses as he does. So far, the revival has hinted that Harrison shares Dexter’s darkness, though things might not be as simple as they seem. Now, Dexter feels conflicted by his fear of creating a monster combined with his desire to find someone who understands him.
Does Harrison have a Dark Passenger in ‘Dexter: New Blood’?
A central question in Dexter: New Blood revolves around whether or not Harrison has a “Dark Passenger.” Does he feel compelled toward violence and killing as Dexter does? Signs are pointing to the answer being yes. In the episode “H is for Hero,” Harrison supposedly stopped his friend Ethan from shooting up the school. He also slashed his friend’s leg in self-defense in the process.
However, Dexter thinks the blood spatter tells a different story, and that Harrison attacked Ethan first. In “Too Many Tuna Sandwiches,” Harrison’s dark passenger makes an even more disturbing appearance. During a wrestling match, he purposely breaks another student’s arm who he has pinned down.
Michael C. Hall discussed Dexter’s ‘contradictory impulses’ toward Harrison
Actor Michael C. Hall returns to his role as Dexter in the revival, Dexter: New Blood. The actor discussed his character’s complicated feelings about the possibility of Harrison having a dark passenger in an interview with Screen Rant.
“[What’s] most interesting to me about that relationship is Dexter has simultaneous contradictory impulses with his son characterized by this, this the wish that [Harrison] is not like him and doesn’t have the dark passenger,” Hall said. “[But], at the exact same time, he desperately hopes that his son is like him.”
“Because I think Dexter is very isolated and a somewhat lonely person,” the actor continued to Screen Rant. “To discover that this product of his flesh and blood shares some sort of fundamental connection to his otherwise isolating secret, something that he can’t help. But on the flip side of this, [Dexter] hopes that Harrison is free of it.”
It’s been hard to discern exactly what Dexter is feeling when he learns that his son has done something violent. Perhaps that’s because Dexter is feeling conflicting emotions. However, Dexter definitely wasn’t pleased when Harrison broke a kid’s arm in front of a room full of people.
Will Harrison kill someone in ‘Dexter: New Blood’?
Although Dexter himself is a killer, he definitely doesn’t want Harrison to take innocent lives. Harrison finds himself caught between two serial killer father figures. Dexter is trying to stop Harrison from hurting innocent people, while Kurt Caldwell urges him to be more and more violent.
Whoever Harrison chooses to listen to will have a huge impact on his fate. Some fans have even speculated that Harrison will kill Dexter in the end. Only time will tell if Harrison can control his dark urges.
