Emmerdale’s Kerry Wyatt (played by Laura Norton) will be returning to the ITV soap next week, after leaving the village without much of an explanation last June. In reality, Laura gave birth during the height of the pandemic and took maternity leave. Ahead of her explosive comeback, the 38-year-old has revealed the real reason behind Kerry’s abrupt exit.

As Emmerdale residents attempt to recover from the shattering events of survival week, the one thing we know is that Kerry isn’t returning to the same old village.

Having fled the village last summer without a storyline, there’s a certain amount of mystery surrounding her character at the moment.

In fact, the circumstances in which Kerry finds herself during her long-awaited return are pretty dark indeed.

After being absent from the soap for more than a year, actress Laura has now opened up on why Kerry left Emmerdale.

Speaking to Express.co.uk and other publications about Kerry’s return, Laura revealed: “It’s random and it’s really different. “I don’t know what I was expecting.

“I love the fact that it is [going] down a different avenue and it’s dark – and again you are going to see another side [of her].”

She has returned to Emmerdale as a cleaner for a family in a multimillion-pound mansion owned by soap newcomer Chloe Harris’ (Jessie Ellands) father.

However, things take a dark turn next week when she catches Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) and Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) robbing the opulent house while she is working away.

Speaking about her first reaction to seeing Charity again, Laura said: “Kerry is shocked, especially under the circumstances and where it is, and she’s a little bit nervous and annoyed.”

Discussing what Kerry makes of Mack, Laura added: “I think Kerry normally likes the look of any male, but at the minute I think that is the last thing on her mind because he is a bit cheeky and a bit rude.

“I just think she hasn’t got the time for him and she probably thinks he is a bit of a scammer like Charity.”

Laura explained the duo wanted to rob goods from the house and picked a time when they thought no one would be inside.

The star revealed Kerry went to work in Chloe’s family home to “get away from the village for a while”, however trouble has a way of finding her.

Kerry left Emmerdale after Tracy Metcalfe (Amy Walsh) found out the truth about the Sharma sweet factory fire which ultimately killed her father, Frank Clayton (Michael Praed).

Unveiling the real reason for Kerry’s exit, Laura said: “We took ourselves off to disappear for a while because of everything that happened with Frank.

“[Kerry] was trying to work out what the best thing to do was and maybe needed a bit of counselling.

“She needed to remove herself for a while as she wasn’t very pleasant.”

Kerry is known for her outrageous outfit choices, outspoken remarks and getting herself embroiled in drama, with Laura describing her as a “tart with a heart”.

However, Laura has hinted that ITV viewers will get to see another side of Kerry this time around.

Laura explained: “You get to see another side to Kerry but of course it’s Kerry and stuff just happens to her. So, she ends up being involved in this awful situation.

“But it was amazing [to be back], beautiful to see everybody and amazing to be working again. But scary, I thought I’d forgotten how to act, it’s been such a long time.

“And also, really difficult to leave the baby because of Covid I’ve spent months being pregnant and then he was seven months when I went back – but I’ve just been in a bubble with him and Mark and the family.”

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV.
