Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl vows to stay out of politics as band returns to UK

DAVE GROHL has grown from hard-rocking party machine to the elder statesman of stadium rock over the course of three decades.

From grunge drummer with Nirvana to frontman of the Foo Fighters, the guitar hero is now a regular at major public events and even performed at The White House for Barack Obama and Sir Paul McCartney.

But despite his high end connections, the superstar jokes he is “the last person” who should be giving advice on major political issues — despite regularly being asked his views.

Announcing the Foos’ return to the UK with four major stadium shows next year, Dave tells me: “I never wanted to be seen as somebody political or someone who is always handing out opinions — but I get asked what I think about all sorts of stuff.

“We’re not really a political band — we try to do what we think is right but we’re not preaching to people.

“Sometimes, though, it can seem as though I’m always talking about the big issues because when people ask me for an opinion I tend to give one.

“But I am the very last person who should be telling anyone else what to do — I get things wrong all the time. There are way better people to turn to than me.”

The band’s latest foray into political controversy came earlier this month when they appeared in a viral video teasing members of the homophobic Westboro Baptist Church who were picketing at a roadside with vile anti-LGBT placards.

Dave and his bandmates arrived dressed as the Bee Gees to perform You Should Be Dancing and chanted: “We love you.”

Laughing about the stunt, Dave quips: “I don’t think they were very happy about it — a group of guys telling them we love them is the last thing they want to hear.

“For us, it’s just about having some fun and doing what we believe is right.”

Dave and the band return to Britain next summer with huge gigs at the London Stadium, Birmingham’s Villa Park and Manchester’s Emirates Old Trafford cricket ground.

It’s a welcome return to performing, he adds, after the band began the US leg of their tour following 18 months of lockdown restrictions preventing live shows.

He explains: “It’s really great to be back. I think we’re enjoying it more than we have done in years because it has been so long.

“I think it has brought a new energy to us after all of these years, and the connection of being at a big concert venue with thousands of fans again is just awesome. I’ve really missed it.

“For years we have been in a fairly relentless cycle, slowly building. Nirvana became huge overnight — nobody expected that — but with this band we’ve built up over time.

“That has meant constant touring, recording, touring, recording, two weeks on and two weeks off for years without taking a break — so I guess that was overdue. The good thing to come from this whole thing has been family time.

“I’ve been home more than ever before and as a family we have really appreciated that.” But Dave adds: “A lot of people would be surprised how wonderfully mundane my home life is.

“I go from playing stadiums of screaming fans to making kids’ packed lunches in my pyjamas and sending them off to school in a minivan.

“I have three daughters. Harper and Violet have seen me perform but this time will be a first for our youngest Ophelia, so that will be a nice experience too.

“I love taking them out to shows. It’s a cool thing to do as a family . . . well, I think so!”

Liam Woos Maya

LIAM PAYNE has whisked ex-fiancée Maya Henry away on a romantic getaway to St Tropez after reconciling.

I revealed last week how he had won back the US model with a number of sweet dates after he ended their engagement earlier this year.

But he cemented things this week by taking her on the fancy trip to the South of France.

The couple attended a yacht party there on Monday evening and were later snapped walking back through the town at 4am.

He announced their split in June, nine months after proposing to her with her grandmother’s engagement ring, and she flew back to the States.

However, they are taking it slow after she returned and they decided to get back together, so she is not currently wearing the band on her ring finger.

Liam is also gearing up to return with new music in the next few weeks after recording a song for the upcoming Disney film, Ron’s Gone Wrong.

He hasn’t had the easiest ride, but things are looking up for him again now.

Mark: is Michelle fitte? Abs-olutely

NEVER mind his washboard abs – Mark Wright has admitted his svelte actress wife Michelle Keegan puts him to shame at the gym.

In an exclusive chat, the TV personality and former pro footballer said: “We work out together at the same gym all the time. It helps to align our days.

“There is a lot of stuff she does better than me. She is better than me at abs.

“She can hold a plank longer than me. We spur each other on.”

Despite happily wowing fans with his torso, super-fit Mark insists that there is more to life than “an eight pack and bulging veins” and refuses to cut out weekend drinking sessions with the lads to keep in shape.

And he says launching his new fitness app TrainWright is far more enjoyable than any TV show.

He revealed: “This is my favourite thing in 11 years since being on telly. It’s not even close.

“Everything I have done I have loved but this is so much more fulfilling.”

Here’s to the girls

MARIAH CAREY, Haim, Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone and Stevie Nicks are among female stars having records reissued for National Album Day on October 16.

The day aims to shine a spotlight on women artists and their contribution to music.

Kylie Minogue will also be celebrated by having her No1 album Fever, featuring hits Can’t Get You Out of My Head and In Your Eyes, reissued on white vinyl for its 20th anniversary.

Sharleen Spiteri and Laura Mvula are among singers who have backed the annual occasion as official ambassadors.

Dad-ly error, Rob

ROB BECKETT got caught out being a bit of a bad dad – in the worst way possible.

The funnyman was accused of being a paedophile when he confused a child for his own kid at Legoland.

Rob said on his Parenting Hell podcast: “A guy went, ‘Why do you keep looking at my daughter?’

“I was going, ‘No I wasn’t,’ like some sort of paedo panic lie.”

Turns out the girl was wearing the same outfit his daughter had worn the day before.

Being a dad’s hard enough.

Lily's magic disney date

DISNEYLAND is marketed as the happiest place on earth and judging by Lily James' expression here, that’s absolutely spot on.

She donned a pair of Mickey Mouse ears as she and her boyfriend Michael Shuman laughed and joked around at the theme park in California.

They enjoyed the benefits of a VIP guided tour and looked like they were making the most of a fun-filled day.

Mamma Mia star Lily wore a white hat with orange vest and denim hot pants.

While Michael, from rockers Queens of the Stone Age, sported a blue cap, white t-shirt and jeans.

He is Lily’s first boyfriend since she was caught with married star Dominic West in Rome last year.

She is currently playing Pamela Anderson in the upcoming TV series Pam & Tommy about the Baywatch legend and her ex-husband, Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee.

A day at Disney is a bit less rock’n’roll, even with her bassist boyfriend.
