'Grey's Anatomy' Fans Are Absolutely Freaking Out About That Surprise [SPOILER] Appearance

[There are major spoilers ahead for Grey’s Anatomy‘s season 17 premiere. If you haven’t watched the episode in its entirety, please exit this post for your own sake!! ]

UM, OKAY, I AM FREAKING OUT OVER HERE. Sorry for the all caps, but if you watched the season premiere Grey’s Anatomy last night, you know they are entirely warranted. At the end of the two-hour return, Grey’s did something that was literally so iconic, so incredible, that the fans are freaking out about it. [Seriously, there are spoilers ahead.]

As a quick recap, toward the very end of the episode, Meredith collapses in the parking lot of Grey Sloan after a particularly troubling shift in the COVID ward. As she’s unconscious on the pavement, she falls into a dream sequence that seems like it’s supposed to signify the bridge between life and death, and in that dream sequence, standing on that beach is… the one and only Derek Shepherd, as a ghost, or figment of her imagination, or angel, whatever you want to call it. It was a shock so great that I had to physically remove my jaw from the floor. The two waved at each other from opposite ends of the beach, and that’s basically where the episode ended. WOW.
