Grey’s Anatomy season 16 was uncompleted when the world went into lockdown. This meant the last remaining episodes had not been finished and ABC wasn’t able to show the planned finale as a result. Nevertheless, Grey’s Anatomy was renewed and will be returning to screens this year.
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Grey’s Anatomy.
Grey’s Anatomy has been part of many ABC viewers’ lives for 15 years.
Series 16 was the first time a season had to be cut short with filming stopped to try and prevent the spread of COVID-19.
There were a few more episodes left to air but unfortunately, these were never shown as the cast and crew were still in the middle of filming them.
Thankfully, Grey’s Anatomy will be back for season 17 very soon.
When will Grey’s Anatomy return?
Last month, ABC revealed its fall schedule along, including the release date of numerous popular series including Grey’s Anatomy.
ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke said: “Our fall schedule is now complete with a dynamic lineup of new and returning drama series.
“From fan-favorite shows like Grey’s Anatomy and The Good Doctor to David E. Kelley’s thrilling new drama Big Sky, our strength is in our storytelling, and we could not be more energized to bring these compelling series to our viewers.”
Grey’s Anatomy season 17 will start on Thursday, November 12, at 9pm on ABC.
When the medical drama does return, the first episode will be a two-hour long special.
As previously confirmed by showrunner Krista Vernoff, Grey’s Anatomy will delve into the real worldwide issue of the coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, actor Giacomo Gianniotti who plays Dr Andrew DeLuca further explained: “We’re going to start the season about a month and a half [into] full COVID.
“It’s going to take place a little beyond where we left off in the last season.
“We’re not picking up right where we left off.”

The show will be paying close attention to the pandemic but will still include “moments” from where Grey’s Anatomy season 16 ended.
Vernoff told TV Line: “In even the best of times, a television writer’s primary job is to know how to pivot.
“We are not working to protect stories we had [planned] for the end of season 16.
“That said, you will get to see some of the immediate moments from where we left off.”
The entirety of the main cast is expected to return for the new season.
What’s more exciting is according to Deadline, actors Camilla Luddington, Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver have recently signed three-year contracts.
This means they are committed to stay with Grey’s Anatomy all the way through to season 19.
Whether or not the show will continue for this long does depends on actress Ellen Pompeo who plays Meredith Grey.
Creator Shonda Rhimes has previously said Grey’s Anatomy will only carry on if Meredith stays.
Actress Pompeo has previously talked about “looking for a change” but as of yet, she is still invested in the long-running series.
Grey’s Anatomy is available to watch on ABC.
