Inside Corrie Spiders career from soap exit, Hollywood fame and Toyah reunion

Former Coronation Street icon Geoffrey 'Spider' Nugent will forever hold a place in soap fans' hearts.

Portrayed by actor Martin Hancock on the ITV series from 1997 – 2003, the character swiftly won over fans with his environmentally conscious activism and chatty personality.

Introduced as Emily Bishop's scruffy nephew, Spider even enjoyed a romance with Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) before Martin announced he was departing the soap to pursue different projects in 2003 and Spider left Weatherfield on a charity mission to Peru.

The 48-year-old actor has since enjoyed a burgeoning acting career, branching out into a number of successful roles.

A few years after his Corrie departure, Martin appeared alongside Orlando Bloom, Liam Neeson and Eva Green in Ridley Scott's 2005 film Kingdom of Heaven.

He later appeared as Reg Lund in 18 episodes of Holby City and in 2008, starred in the WW2 drama Defiance with Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber.

Following that success, he went on to minor roles in Being Human, Doctors and Endeavour.

Last year, Martin appeared in Sky One series In The Long Run and it seems a Corrie return isn't entirely off the table.

Previously, he told the Daily Express: "As to the future, well, I may go back to Coronation Street one day.

"Who knows when Spider Nugent might return?"

Interest in Martin's career piqued earlier this month when Toyah actress Georgia Taylor posted a throwback photo of the actors together on Instagram.

Taking to the social media site, the actress shared an adorable image of the iconic soap couple in 1999.

Georgia also previously revealed that she would approve of Spider's return to Weatherfield.

She told Inside Soap: "I loved working with Martin Hancock, who played Spider.

"He and Toyah split up off screen and they haven't seen each other in about 15 years, so it would be interesting to see what Toyah's first love is up to now."

Coronation Street airs on ITV on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7.30pm and 8.30pm
