Is The Drowning based on a true story?

02/02/2021

THE Drowning has only just kicked off on Channel 5 but has already got viewers hooked.

The gripping storyline has now got fans wondering if it is based on a true story or not.

Is The Drowning based on a true story?

Although the storyline will be hauntingly true to some parents who have lost children in a drowning accident, the story is not based on actual events.

The story is very real and there will be families out there who have been through similar ordeals.

The new four-part thriller has been created by Noel Clarke and Jason Maza.

Jason said he wanted the audience to be asking questions about who they could trust, and this concept was attractive to Channel 5.

Actress Jill Halfpenny plays the mum who loses her son on a family outing, and told the press: "I imagine losing a child has to be the most awful loss one could suffer, that seems very obvious to me.

"I think losing a child under circumstances where you do not fully know what happened is another layer of torture.

"Some of her family think Tom is dead and Jodie thinks he is still alive. She feels it clearly inside her."

What is The Drowning about?

The thriller tells the story of a grieving mother who lost her son on a family outing after he appeared to have drowned in a lake.

Nine years later she sees a teenage boy who she is convinced is her missing son, leading her down a "dangerous and transgressive path".

She develops an obsession with the boy, following him to his school and attempting to become a part of his life.

Over the four episodes viewers will see the worrying lengths Jodie will go to in order to get closer to Daniel.

When is The Drowning next on TV and how can I watch it?

It will be on Channel 5 at 9pm again TONIGHT (Tuesday, February 2).
