Kirsten Dunst Calls Out Very Extreme Pay Gap on Tobey Maguire Spider-Man Movies11/16/2021
”You know who was on the cover of the second ‘Spider-Man’ poster … Spider-Man and ME,“ actress says
Kirsten Dunst said that the pay disparity between herself and Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man in the “Spider-Man” trilogy of movies was “very extreme.”
In a career-spanning interview and profile with The Independent from over the weekend, Dunst said she didn’t even think about the pay gap on the films until she was much older, despite the fact that by the time she was cast in the films, she already had an established career in movies like “Interview With a Vampire,” “Jumanji,” “Bring It On” and “The Virgin Suicides.”
“The pay disparity between me and Spider-Man was very extreme,” Dunst told The Independent. “I didn’t even think about it. I was just like, ‘Oh yeah, Tobey is playing Spider-Man.’ But you know who was on the cover of the second ‘Spider-Man’ poster?”
“Spider-Man and ME,” she added.
Dunst also alluded to an anecdote saying that she was asked to get her teeth straightened and at 19 even had a “Spider-Man” producer drive her to a dentist’s office but she refused.
“I was like, ‘Mmmmm, no, I like my teeth,’” she said. “Also, Sofia [Coppola] loved my teeth.”
And The Independent further noted that Dunst’s teeth were magically straightened on the final poster for “Spider-Man 2.”
Dunst, however, recently told Variety that if given the opportunity to reprise her role as Mary Jane Watson in the “Spider-Man” franchise that she would be very open to the chance. And rumors have been swirling for months that she might appear in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” opening later this year, which features the villain from “Spider-Man 2” — Doc Ock (Alfred Molina).
“I would never say no to something like that,” she said. “I’d be old MJ at this point with little Spidey babies.”
Dunst currently stars in Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” arriving soon on Netflix. Read her full interview with The Independent here.
