Law and Order: Special Victims Unit has seen many changes made to the main detective team over the past two decades. One of the original characters was Detective Monique Jeffries who left in season two. But what was the reason behind actress Michelle Hurd calling it a day on the NBC drama?
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Law and Order SVU.
Why did Michelle Hurd leave as Detective Monique Jeffries?
Jeffries worked under Captain Cragen (Dann Florek) and was first partnered up with Detective Brian Cassidy (Dean Winters) before switching to now-retired Detective John Munch (Richard Belzer).
She was originally very professional and did everything by the book but soon got a taste for danger in the job.
This eventually led her to become more of a loose cannon and she even slept with a suspect which forced her out of active duty.
Jeffries was reassigned to a desk job and believed it was temporary until she found out her replacement had been hired.
Jeffries resigned but then threatened to sue the department for what she thought was discrimination.
To stop her taking the unit to the court, she was transferred to Vice, leaving the team behind for good.
The only time she did reappear was in season two when she helped out the SVU during an investigation that was linked to her own.
So what happened behind the scenes which caused Jeffries to be written out of the show?
Actress Hurd hasn’t spoken out publicly about why she decided to leave Law and Order.
However, it has been widely reported it was her choice to go because she didn’t think her character wasn’t being properly used in the cast.
She didn’t think the creators had enough belief in her or Jeffries as a character so thought it would be better she left.
Jeffries is the only main character from the first eight seasons to not return in a guest or recurring role after leaving the show.

She was replaced by Detective Finn Tutuola (Ice T) who is the second longest-serving character in the franchise.
He was originally only supposed to appear in four episodes but quickly bonded with the rest of the team.
There was some concern he was going to be leaving the show as he was to star in The Mediator with Ice-T.
But this was only a four-week run so the actor and rapper was still able to continue working on new episodes of SVU.
Law and Order: SVU will be back later this year for season 23 on NBC.
The series will begin on September 23 after season 22 came to an end last month.
This won’t be the end of the drama though as it has already been renewed for series 24.
Law and Order is available to watch on NBC.
