Viewers couldn’t be happier to see NCIS make its return next Tuesday after the CBS procedural left the series on a major cliffhanger in the middle of March. After the sad departure of Jack Sloane (played by Maria Bello), the latest addition to the team is already ruffling feathers in the first sneak peek at episode 11.
Special guest star Zane Holtz is set to make his NCIS debut as agent Dane Sawyer in season 18, episode 11, ‘Gut Punch’.
The next instalment of the popular crime drama will introduce Sawyer as a smarmy rival agent who takes on cases during the night shift.
However, after the events of the latest episode, ‘Watchdog’, agents Torres (Wilmer Valderrama), Bishop (Emily Wickersham) and McGee (Sean Murray) will all be taking a backseat when the series returns.
A new promotional clip for the next episode appears to set up an ongoing feud between Torres and Sawyer.
In the first-look footage, Sawyer makes himself a little too comfortable with agent Bishop, prompting a riled up Torres to step in.
Episode 11 will act as a reunion for the two actors, who both starred in From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series from 2014-16.
Rumours were initially floating that nighttime agent Dale Sawyer will take on a recurring role as agent Jack Sloane’s replacement following her departure last month.
Although these theories were quickly shot down, the new promo has set up a fiery dynamic between Torres and Sawyer that could come into play in future episodes.
Taking a look at the new promo, Sawyer seems to bear a grudge after Leroy Gibbs (Mark Harmon) was suspended for his violent actions towards a potential suspect.
Sawyer chastises Bishop for walking away scot free from the incident, believing the rest of the team should also be punished for fudging the truth about Gibbs’ misdemeanour.
He says to Bishop: “Gibbs took it on the chin, but his disciples barely got a reprimand. Why?”
While guest star Zane Holtz is only confirmed to be appearing in one episode so far, his ill will towards the daytime team could come into play if Sawyer starts making regular appearances.

After laying into Bishop, Torres squares up to the new agent and reminds him the night shift is over.
However, Sawyer replies ominously: “Oh, I think it’s just beginning.”
As the team tries to figure out what he meant, fellow nighttime agent Veronica Tyler (Victoria Gabrielle Platt) takes on a new case.
Meanwhile, an additional promo clip sees Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) relegate the team to COVID compliance duty.
It appears the regular NCIS crew could be facing a demotion after lying about Gibbs’ actions earlier in the season.
Their unconventional punishment would therefore leave Sawyer and the night team free to swoop in and take on the team’s regular cases.
Torres definitely won’t be taking the latest developments well, so hopefully the agents will be able to atone for their mistakes and get back to their regular duties in due course.
NCIS season 18 continues Tuesday, April 6 on CBS.
