The actress is best known for her role as Claire Fraser in Outlander but in a move away from the Starz series, Caitriona Balfe is trying her hand at producing. Between filming for season seven of the highlander romance, Caitriona will be developing a film and could even try directing it too.
Caitriona, 42, who recently gave birth to her first child, explained she has optioned Here Is the Beehive by author Sara Crossman.
She is hoping to develop and direct the film now she has more of a platform.
Caitriona explained: “This is another gift Outlander has given me.
“As a woman in this industry it’s important you create your own destiny, in a way.”
The star went on to add there are “going to be huge lulls and dips” if she always waits by the phone.
She continued: “I think you have to look at different ways of how you’re going to sustain a career and have longevity.”
Caitriona most recently starred as Ma in Kenneth Branagh’s film Belfast and he is confident in her abilities.
He told the Los Angeles Times: “She can and will direct, because she has plenty of things she wants to say, she has an eye for how to say them, and she is determined.
“I’m excited to see her develop that part of her work.
“She is an original and passionate voice, and six seasons of Outlander is a hell of a training ground for the technical side of filming.”
In the meantime, Caitriona will be tested in Outlander as her character Claire continues to struggle after being attacked at the end of series five.
The sixth season of Outlander sees a continuation of Claire and Jamie’s (played by Sam Heughan) fight to protect those they love, as they navigate the trials and tribulations of life in colonial America.
Establishing a home in the New World is by no means an easy task, particularly in the wild backcountry of North Carolina – and perhaps most significantly – during a period of dramatic political upheaval.
The Frasers strive to maintain peace and flourish within a society which – as Claire knows all too well – is unwittingly marching towards Revolution.
Against this backdrop, which heralds the birth of the new American nation, Claire and Jamie have built a home together at Fraser’s Ridge.
They must now defend this home – established on land granted to them by the Crown – not only from external forces, but also from the increasing strife and conflict in the community within their care.
For the Frasers and their immediate family, “home” is more than simply a site in which they live, it is the place where they are laying the foundations for the rest of their lives.
If season four asked “What is home?” and season five asked, “What are you willing to do to protect your home?” then Season six explores what happens when there is disharmony and division among the inhabitants of the home you’ve created.
“When you become an outsider, or an ‘outlander,’ so to speak, marginalised and rejected in your own home.”
Outlander will debut on Sunday 6 March 2022 in the UK for the first time on STARZPLAY
