Throughout Hulu’s dystopian show, fans witnessed June Osborne’s (played by Elisabeth Moss) multiple attempted escapes. However, on one occasion, two of her fellow Handmaids met their fatal demise after a major mistake, leaving fans furious at The Handmaid’s Tale.
In episode three of season four, June was escaping Gilead for the final time.
After getting caught by the Guardians, hiding out on Esther Keyes (Mckenna Grace) farm, June was taken to a faculty where she faced a brutal interrogation at the hands of evil disciplinarian Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd).
Fellow fugitive Handmaids Janine Lindo (Madeline Brewer), Alma (Nina Kiri) and Brianna (Bahia Watson) were back at the farm hidden.
However, June eventually gave up their location, after Lydia led June to a room where daughter Hannah Bankole (Jordana Blake) was being held in a glass box, threatening her life.
The women at the farm were caught and, alongside June and Aunt Lydia were in a van on their way to the colonies.
As they reached a railroad crossing, June saw another opportunity to escape and she took it.
The vehicle stopped at the sign and the driver stepped out and went to the side of the bushes to pee.
The ladies silently agreed to make a run for it and, before they dashed, June took the chance to get some revenge on Aunt Lydia.
She grabbed the disciplinarian’s electrocution wand and pressed it down against her neck before deciding not to kill her, allowing her to instead join the ladies.
As they ran towards the barrier in a bid to make it before the train, the driver heard the commission and shot down two women.
In the shocking scene, June and Janine make it across, whereas Alma and Brianna were killed after being struck by the train.
This left fans of The Handmaid’s Tale furious as they believed Alma and Brianna could have made it across if it wasn’t for June holding down Aunt Lydia.
The viewer took to Reddit to express their annoyance: “I wonder if they’d have more time to run if June hit Aunt Lydia and knocked her unconscious, the guard might not have noticed as quickly?”
Another fan agreed and wrote: “June really needs to act faster, she took a good few seconds to eventually decide not to beat the sh-t out of Lydia.
“Should have electrocuted her and left the van asap, Alma could’ve been saved with those few seconds.”
The women were escaping Gilead where they were forced to become Handmaid’s after state laws were implemented across America.
They were subject to physical, emotional and sexual abuse in the houses they were placed to work at.
Together, June and Janine eventually made it to Chicago, however, it was discovered later in the series that after bombs were being deployed, Janine was lost under rubble and then taken back to Gilead.
Whereas June was found by Humanitarian volunteers and was taken to Canada where she became a free woman.
