BBC viewers tuned in to watch the first instalment of the broadcaster’s new six-part series The Tourist. The intense opening episode saw an Irish tourist (played by Jamie Dornan) get chased by a merciless truck driver in the Australian Outback until he was knocked off the road. After waking up in hospital with amnesia, Jamie’s character set off on a quest to regain his lost memories. Prior to the episode landing, his co-star dropped a hint about her character’s link to The Man following the cliffhanger ending.

During the inaugural episode, Jamie’s character woke up in a hospital bed covered in cuts and bruises, with no memory of his name or life.

Determined to get answers, the nameless Irishman started putting the pieces of the puzzle together with the help of a local police officer called Helen Chambers (Danielle Macdonald).

Later on in the instalment, the character realises someone wants him dead and he has to find out who he is before his enemies catch up to him on his trek across the red hot backlands of Australia.

The Tourist viewers were left on the edge of their seats after the episode ended on a major cliffhanger caused by a waitress called Luci (Shalom Brune-Franklin).

Ahead of the first episode of The Tourist airing, Shalom told Express.co.uk told fans teased what is coming up in the fast-paced drama.

Shalom, who has also starred in Line Of Duty, explained: “My heart is beating so fast, I feel like I am going to give spoilers away.

“Luci is a waitress and it’s really difficult, she maybe has a history with The Man and there’s a really interesting dynamic going on between the two of them while Jamie’s character is trying to unveil the truth.

“She’s trying to hide it – that’s a really general statement.”

With another five episodes yet to air, Shalom couldn’t give reveal much more about her character’s relationship with The Man.

However, the 27-year-old English-Australian actress did unveil her excitement over the script for the series.

She said: “I read the first episode and I read the first 10 pages and was like ‘Ah this is so cool, I love this character.’

“I wondered why she does these things and I instantly warmed to the character.

“It was great to have a meeting with [the director] Chris [Sweeney] on Zoom, although I think we spent the first half of it talking about Married At First Sight, so the trust was instantly there.

“[There are] amazing people and an amazing script, that was my reaction.”

Director Chris Sweeney, who spoke to Express.co.uk alongside Shalom also detailed his huge enthusiasm for the script which was written by brothers Jack and Harry Williams.

Chris stated: “I’ve known these two [writers] since I was a kid and I know they are really funny and I know they write thrillers.

“But I didn’t know anything about The Tourist I just knew it was something they loved.

“And I started reading it and I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is insane’.

“I read the first episode which was complete when I came on board and I knew we had to do this because it was so strange. It made me laugh but it was really thrilling.”

The Tourist continues January 2 on BBC One at 9pm.
