Vernon Kay and Tess Daly’s relationship – from age gap to sexting scandal

11/15/2020

I’m a Celebrity star Vernon Kay recently revealed the touching reason he signed up for the ITV show was for his family.

Vernon, 46, said: "I am doing it for my daughters, Phoebe and Amber. It's a show they watch on a regular basis and they get behind the people in the camp. I think the fact I am involved in it will make it even more fun for them!

"And now it is approaching, they are so excited. Every time I talk about it, I get a double fist pump from them and they are thrilled to be involved."

It’s clear that the TV personality will be missing his daughters when he moves into the haunted castle this weekend.

The presenter is currently isolating away from his family, including wife Tess Daly.

Tess, 51, and Vernon have been married since September 2003, and together have Phoebe, 16 and 11-year-old Amber.

The family leave in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, and gave fans an insight into their home life during lockdown.

After Vernon was confirmed as a contestant in this year’s I’m a Celebrity, his loving wife Tess posted on Instagram: "For years we have watched this show together, cheering the campmates on, laughing at the genius Geordie duo @antanddec and celebrating the King and Queens of the jungle."

She added: "This year we'll be watching Vern take part. He is over the moon to be on the show, red gilet an' all. Good luck Vern!! #imaceleb."

But Tess, who herself hosts Strictly Come Dancing, previously found herself giving her husband an ultimatum, according to reports.

The couple have had their struggles since getting married 17-years-ago.

When did they get together?

Tess and Vernon stared dating back in 2001, when he was a host on T4.

Speaking previously, Tess told Digital Spy that it was "all quite immediate" as they "instantly had such a blast together".

She said it was an "explosive" relationship, and it was only two years later that the pair tied the knot.

Three years later, they joined forces to present the BBC’s new singing competition Just The Two of Us.

What was the scandal?

Things became rocky for the TV couple in 2010 when an alleged sexting scandal emerged.

According to reports, Vernon admitted to sending racy texts to model Rhian Sudden for several months.

He is also said to have met her in a Bolton nightclub.

Vernon previously told the Radio Times of the scandal: "You may or may not be aware that because of some foolish and stupid decisions I have made, I have disappointed and I have let down a lot of people. To my family and everybody, I am very sorry."

Shockingly the presenter was caught out again in 2016 for sending messages to the model, leading Rhian to pen an open apology letter to Tess.

In the letter, she wrote: "The exchange of messages was inappropriate and I should not have encouraged such behaviour. I know it takes two to tango but I could have stopped contact."

Vernon posted on social media at the time: "Regarding today’s story: I was contacted by Rhian out of the blue back in December regarding the story in 2010 claiming she had information she wanted to pass on.

"I recognise how it may look when messages are pulled out of context but there was never any inappropriate intent to our communication, I was merely trying to find answers to questions that I've had since 2010.

"Tess is aware of everything that has been discussed with Rhian."

Tess stuck by her husband, referring to their relationship as a “work in progress.”

Now as he prepares to take on bushtucker trials, the pair seem closer than ever.

What has Rhian said?

Rhian admitted earlier this year she wishes she had "never met" Vernon, after a series of flirty text messages they exchanged in 2010 went public.

Speaking in Channel 4 documentary Page Three: The Naked Truth, the 33-year-old claimed the incident "ruined her career".

Rhian also said the aftermath of the scandal, which saw the duo both exchange flirty messages despite being in separate relationships at the time, made her feel "sick".
