REVEALED: Ghislaine Maxwell owes New York State more than $1.5M in back taxes, Lisa Marie Presley needs to pay back $636K and disgraced ‘Taxi King’ Eugene Freidman tops the list with $17M

  • New York State publishes a monthly list of the top 250 tax delinquents
  • Ghislaine Maxwell, 59, is No. 47 on the list; she owes Albany $1,520,558.84
  • Lisa Marie Presley, 53, is No. 177; Elvis’ daughter owes the state $636,950.33
  • Evgeny ‘Gene’ Freidman, 50, former ‘taxi king,’ tops list, owing more than $17M

Ghislaine Maxwell owes the State of New York more than $1.5million in back taxes, according to officials in Albany.

The 59-year-old British socialite, who is set to stand trial in federal court this fall for allegedly helping Jeffrey Epstein procure young girls for his sex trafficking operation, is in arrears on her state income tax.

According to the state’s Department of Taxation and Finance, Maxwell owes Albany $1,520,558.84.

Her name appears on the agency’s monthly list of 250 people who owe the highest sum in back taxes. Maxwell is No. 47.

Maxwell, 59, has pleaded not guilty to federal sex trafficking and other charges over her alleged role in procuring four teenage girls for Epstein to abuse between 1994 and 2004.

Lisa Marie Presley, the 53-year-old singer-songwriter and the only child of the late Elvis Presley, is said to owe the Empire State $636,950.33

Her trial is set to begin in November. Maxwell pleaded not guilty in April.

The socialite daughter of the late British media mogul Robert Maxwell has been jailed at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since last July, when she was arrested at a New Hampshire estate.

The federal judge presiding over her case has denied bail five times, twice rejecting a $28.5 million proposed package that would have required Maxwell to remain in a New York City dwelling with 24-hour armed guards.

Epstein killed himself in a Manhattan jail in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

Maxwell isn’t the only headline name on New York State’s list of tax scofflaws.

Lisa Marie Presley, the 53-year-old singer-songwriter and the only child of the late Elvis Presley, is No. 177 on the list. She is said to owe the Empire State $636,950.33.

Maxwell and Presley aren’t nearly as delinquent as the one-time New York City ‘taxi king’ Evgeny ‘Gene’ Freidman.

According to the state, Freidman owes $18,703,439.72.

In May 2018, Friedman pleaded guilty in state court to criminal tax fraud after admitting that he illegally pocketed $5million in state tax money.

He was sentenced to five years probation. As part of the terms of his plea agreement, he agreed to cooperate with investigators looking into alleged fraud committed by Michael Cohen, the former personal attorney for former President Donald Trump.

Cohen pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations and other crimes. In 2018, he was sentenced to three years in federal prison, though he won early release after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

Freidman once owned a fleet of some 800 New York City taxis, the medallions of which were once valued as high as $1.2million in 2014.

But the rise of ride-sharing apps like Uber and Lyft proved devastating for the yellow cab industry as the value of medallions plummeted to around $300,000.

In 2016, Freidman declared bankruptcy on some of his medallions. A year later, the New York State Attorney General’s Office charged him with theft.

Earlier this year, Governor Andrew Cuomo indicated that he would sign a budget bill that calls for tax hikes on the wealthy.

Democrats in New York hope the tax increase could bring in at least $2.8billion this upcoming year and prevent the need for spending cuts in years to come.

New York’s top income tax rate is currently 8.82 percent for income over roughly $1million, while New York City residents face an additional 3.88 percent top tax rate.

New York is now set to raise the combined top tax rate for New York City millionaires above California’s top income tax rate of 13.3 percent.

New Yorkers who make over $1million would face a 9.65 percent income tax rate.

That increases to 10.3 percent for taxpayers who make between $5million and $25million, and 10.9 percent for those who make over $25million.
