Skips are Britain’s best value crisps, according to a new ‘Crisp Index’.

Researchers crunched through more than 2,000 crisps to create a table showing the best bargain snacks. 

They counted the number of crisps in a packet and then divided them by the price per bag to work out how much consumers are paying per crisp.

And KP Snacks’ Skips were the best by far with an average of 97 crisps per bag and a cost of 1.03p per crisp.

Proper Chips Lentil Barbecue were uncovered as the priciest pack, coming in at 7.6p per crisp.

Three packets of every main brand of crisps and their individual flavours were purchased, in order to get a more robust average data point.

The packets were chosen from the meal-deal section of three major supermarkets, ASDA, Tesco and Sainsburys, but were bought at full price and not as part of a meal deal.

No multi-pack packets of crisps were used in the study.

Money saving website www.CouponBirds.com was inspired to look at the price per crisp, rather than per gram, due to the crushing disappointment people feel when they’ve eaten the last crisp in a pack without realising it was the last crisp; therefore, not having the opportunity to savour it properly, coining the term ‘crispair’.

After Skips, Wotsits came in second place at 1.14p per crisp, followed by Nik Naks (Nice’n’Spicy) at 1.32p, Walkers Supreme Prawn Cocktail at 1.75p, Walkers Seriously Salt and Vinegar at 1.84p and Walkers legendary ready salted at 1.88p.

Meanwhile second place in the worst value list were Proper Chips Lentil (sea salt and balsamic vinegar of Modena) with just 13.5 crisps per bag and an average of 7.04p per crisp.

Third and fourth were – disappointingly for old school crisp fans – Monster Munch Roast Beef at 6.67p per crisp and Popchips barbecue at 5.56p per crisp.

While buyers get an average of 97.5 Skips in a pack and 79 Wotsits, they’ll only find 12.5 crisps in a bag of Proper’s lentil barbecue crisps, 13.5 in the Salt & Vinegar variety and just 15 in Walker’s Roast Beef Monster Munch.

‘So, we decided to investigate which crisp packets contain the highest number of crisps for the best value, providing valuable insights for money-conscious snackers.

‘The team manually counted more than 2,500 crisps by hand to make the UK Crisp Index possible and, although the research was painstaking, the fact that they got to eat them all once the project was completed means they’re on-board to turn this into an annual index to make sure that consumers are getting the best value for their hard-earned money when it comes to snacks.’
