When was the high five invented?

THE humble high five can express a lot of strong emotions such as excitement, appreciation and success.

While most of us will high five someone in our lifetime, we don't know where the gesture came from.

Who invented the high five?

It is not known who invented the high five exactly as it has many possible origins and is used across the world, even as an emoji.

Some point to the low five as it's predecessor, which has existed in African American culture since the 1920s.

It was added to the dictionary in 1980 as a noun and then extended to a verb the following year.

Former basketball player Magic Johnson once suggested he invented the gesture, while others point to the women's volleyball circuit in 1960s as the source.

The origins are likely rooted in sport as most stories involve the gesture happening at a sporting event of some kind.

Most commonly the inventor has been that Los Angeles Dodgers Dusty Baker and Glenn Burke invented the high five during a game at Dodger Stadium.

Another origin story is from University of Louisville Cardinals in a basketball practice.

Wiley Brown went to give teammate Derek Smith a low five, but Derek reportedly said "No. Up high" and the rest is history.

High fives have become so recognised there has been a national high five day in America on the third Thursday of April every year since 2002.

When was the high five invented?

Using the most well documented origin, the high five can be pinpointed to October 2, 1977.

In the sixth inning of a game at the Dodgers Stadium, Dusty Baker hit a home run which was his 30th home run.

This made the LA Dodgers the first team ever to have four hitters with 30 home runs each in one season – a high five worthy moment.

Teammate Glenn Burke put his hand in the air triumphantly and Baker slapped it, captivating the audience with the energy of the gesture.

It became the Dodger's standard salute following a home run after this, although Burke's position in the team was short lived.

Burke was traded to Oakland Athletics which some of his teammates maintain was due to Burke being an openly gay player.

San Francisco's Castro district became home to the high five as a "defiant symbol of gay pride", according to Mooallem for ESPN.
