A YOUNG mum has plunged to her death in front of friends after climbing to the top of a waterfall blocked off to the public to take a selfie.

Amanda Franco dos Santos, 26, died after falling from Corupa Waterfall in Santa Catarina, Brazil, and was found washed down stream days later.

Amanda and her two pals took an alternative route after tracks to the popular waterfall were closed off to the public on Sunday.

But shortly after 4.50pm, Amanda's friends noticed she had disappeared and called police.

Crews from the local volunteer fire department launched a frantic search and rescue mission but were ultimately unable to find the mum-of-one.

Her body was later found after it had washed through several casades.

Upon arrival, two sisters, Shraddha and Shweta Singh, 14 and 22, entered the water to take a selfie but one of the teens quickly got into trouble after losing her footing, witnesses said.

Other members of the family, including their bother Himanshu Singh, 18, their cousin Rishabh Singh, 24 and his wife Sulekha Singh, 22, jumped in holding hands to try and rescue the sisters.

Brothers Abhay Singh, 22, and Ratnesh Singh, 26, also got into the plunge pool to help.

But within moments of jumping in to save Shraddha and Shweta, their relatives all began drowning in deep water, witnesses said.
